Löningen combines trails along the Hase with striking reminders of its architectural and milling history. You can shape your stay around active pursuits on the riverside trails, cultural history at St. Vitus and the Schuten Mill, or excursions on horseback and herb tours.

Along the Hase: trails and orientation

Trails along the Hase in Löningen are designed for cyclists, walkers and Nordic walkers. The motorhome parking area is next to the riverside trails and a short walk from the pedestrian zone. This gives you two different points of reference for planning your day: getting active by the Hase and visiting the pedestrian zone. Check the current facilities at the parking area and the condition of the trails before your trip.

The Löningen circular routes and the Hase-Ems Tour

All six Löningen circular routes start at the Hasetal car park. This shared starting point provides a clear reference for route planning; check the trail details before setting out. The Hase-Ems Tour is signposted in both directions, too. Check the signs on site before you start.

St. Vitus, historic trails and mills

The freestanding bell tower of St. Vitus is considered a landmark of Löningen. Its freestanding bell tower is reminiscent of Italian campanile architecture.

Löningen’s history can also be explored beyond the church: five historic trails feature a total of 47 information boards. The Schuten Mill is the last of the eleven wind and water mills that once stood in Löningen. The restored mill is fully operational and has two grinding mills; it attracts visitor groups from the region and abroad. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what visiting options are available.

Horseback excursions, herb tours and the Hahnenmoor

Horseback excursions are among the tourist activities available in Löningen. Guided visitor programmes include herb tours; walks through the Hahnenmoor are also on offer. Located near Herzlake, the Hahnenmoor is considered a protected natural area with distinctive flora and fauna. It offers a nature experience in its own right, alongside the riverside trails by the Hase, but the two do not form a single route.

Restaurants in Löningen serve everything from hearty traditional German food to Mediterranean cuisine. This range gives you a practical guide when planning meals as part of the rest of your trip. As offerings may change, it is worth checking what is currently available.

A cultural highlight in the wider destination of Cloppenburg

The Museumsdorf Cloppenburg – Lower Saxony Open-Air Museum is a cultural highlight in the wider destination of Cloppenburg. Through around 60 historic buildings, it offers insights into the living conditions of the rural population of north-western Germany from the late Middle Ages to the 1980s. A visit provides a distinct perspective on the region’s history, separate from Löningen’s local attractions.
