Bruchhausen-Vilsen lies amid gently rolling green hills on the edge of the high geest. The town combines a distinctive historic centre with themes of forest, water and movement, allowing you to tailor your trip to your own interests. It has been officially recognised as a climatic health resort since 1976. If its current status matters to your travel plans, check it beforehand.

Townscape and culture

In the historic centre, old half-timbered houses stand around St Cyriakus Church. Bistros, pubs, cafés and shops give the town centre its character; you can browse and stop for refreshments along the way. The Tourism Service Office is right at the station of Germany’s first museum railway. Bruchhausen-Vilsen is also home to an automobile museum and a paper museum. These museum themes offer a different focus from the half-timbered houses and church, giving you further options to consider when planning your trip.

Forests, water and trails

In Heiligenberg, forests and ravines around the sources of the Eyter shape the landscape. Nature conservation and the protection of habitats take priority there. The forester’s lodge and the monastery mill, including its waterwheel, are also part of the landscape. Visitors can find places to stay and eat in Heiligenberg; if you would like to use it as a base, check the specific options and their availability.

The spa park provides a setting for music and art events. If an event date matters to your trip, it is worth checking the latest schedule. The Vilser Holz begins right beside the spa park, with walking paths, terrain therapy trails and a fitness trail. This offers different ways to get out and about, from a stroll to a workout on a designated trail.

The Brokser Circular Trail starts at the information point at the station, crosses meadows to the main drainage canal and returns via Bruchhausen. It is 7.5 kilometres long. Its highlights include the museum railway, the Water Trail, biotopes and the canal. The themed Water Trail explores groundwater protection and groundwater exploration at six information boards; a water-themed adventure playground is another local attraction.

For cycling, there is another range of options: five well-marked routes run through the Bruchhausen-Vilsen collective municipality. This means you can choose between a single, specifically described route such as the Brokser Circular Trail and several cycling routes across the municipality. Before setting out on a particular route, it is advisable to check the latest route information and signage. In the wider Diepholz destination, a roughly two-kilometre moorland discovery trail with ten stations takes you through the moor ecosystem and can be enjoyed in any season. Its focus on the moor sets it apart from the cycling routes.
