Forest trails, water and half-timbered heritage reveal very different sides of Sulingen. Rathloser Gehege is the town’s largest contiguous forest; walks through parkland and the Suletal valley begin at the town lake. The area also has historic buildings, exhibitions and a varied cultural programme. You can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.

Experience Forest and Water

A forest discovery trail winds through the Rathloser Gehege woodland. Small signs mark the stops and explain the activities at each one. The trail combines exercise with short activities that draw your attention to the surroundings.

The 6.5-hectare town lake is a starting point for a walk through Mühlenhofpark and the northern Suletal valley, with its millpond. The Suletal is a nature reserve. Within a few minutes of setting off, you’ll pass historic buildings. Sulingen therefore offers a forest trail as well as walks around the park, lake and valley, each providing a different way to enjoy nature.

Activities and Leisure

The Generation Park has a water playground with slides, as well as a BMX track. The two attractions offer different kinds of activity: playing in the water and cycling on the BMX track.

Guided public cycling tours are offered in Sulingen from April to October. If you’d like to include a tour in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period in advance. This lets you fit the seasonal offering around your other plans without relying on a particular tour date.

Half-Timbered Houses, Church and Local History

The Alte Bürgermeisterei is one of Sulingen’s oldest half-timbered houses. It was built around 1730, shortly after the great fire of 1719. The upper floor houses an exhibition on the town’s history. Sulingen’s oldest half-timbered house stands on Meierdamm; it regularly hosts art exhibitions. Both houses provide tangible links to Sulingen’s half-timbered heritage, while the exhibition at the Alte Bürgermeisterei focuses on the town’s history.

St. Nicolai Church also brings together several periods in time: its history dates back to 1200, while it acquired its present-day neo-Gothic appearance in the 19th century. Half-timbered houses around the church shape the townscape. The church also hosts recurring cultural events: the Sulingen Cultural Association (Kulturverein Sulingen e.V.) regularly holds its “Höret gut zu!” reading and “Konzert zwischen den Jahren” concert there between Christmas and New Year.

At the town lake, the Sulingen Local History Association Museum (Museum des Heimatvereins Sulingen e.V.) presents life and work in the Sulingen region in the past in a permanent exhibition. Special exhibitions on a range of topics change monthly. According to the theatre’s description, the programme at Stadttheater Sulingen spans contemporary and classic plays, music, comedy and cabaret. Local history, changing exhibition topics and performing arts therefore offer different ways to explore Sulingen’s culture.

More to Explore in the Wider Diepholz Destination

The Diepholz district encompasses two tourism regions and two nature parks. Among the independent cultural attractions in the wider Diepholz destination is the DĂĽmmer Museum in Lembruch. It presents the nature, landscape and culture of Lake DĂĽmmer in the past, present and future. Original artefacts dating from between 4,000 and 2,000 BC, along with reconstructions, bring the Stone Age at Lake DĂĽmmer to life. A research station in the museum explains the ecology of the DĂĽmmer ecosystem in detail.

The Dümmer Museum also offers a two-hour discovery tour exploring life in the waters of Lake Dümmer. Equipment used includes a landing net, plankton net, thermometer, questionnaire and microscope. The activity is designed for families and small groups of fewer than 15 people, school classes, and groups of no more than 25 people. Another focus on cultural history in the wider Diepholz destination is the Syke District Museum with the Gesseler Goldhort Forum. The district’s museum of cultural and everyday history presents daily life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day.

The nature attractions in the wider Diepholz destination also offer distinct experiences. A roughly two-kilometre moor discovery trail leads through Diepholz Moor, with ten informative stops about the moor ecosystem, inviting visitors to experience it in every season. Moorwelten in Wagenfeld is a multimedia experience centre devoted to moors and climate. The moor railway stops right at Moorwelten and takes visitors to the “Moorpadd” nature trail and the hiking trails in Neustädter Moor.

A cycle route signage system guides recreational cyclists along around 1,700 kilometres of routes in the Diepholz district. The 137-kilometre Hunte River Cycle Route also runs from Elsfleth to Lake DĂĽmmer. The Hunte has been developed as an attractive destination for nature-based tourism and canoeing in the Diepholz district; around 105 kilometres of the river, from the OsnabrĂĽck region to Oldenburg, are navigable by canoe. Lake DĂĽmmer also offers plenty of leisure activities for sailors and surfers.

The places and activities described here provide concrete ways to explore the area.
