Discover Lindern: Moorland, cycling routes and windmill
Accommodation in Lindern
Lindern brings together moorland, cycling routes and technical cultural history as distinctive travel themes. Sulinger Moor lies on the edge of the village; the Moor Circular Route introduces its special features, and the Schafdamm leads through the moor. Labbus Windmill adds a protected cultural monument.
Moorland and circular route
Sulinger Moor is one of 15 former living raised bogs in the Diepholz Moor Depression. The land consolidation area covers the eastern part of Lindern’s cadastral district; large areas of it are protected by the “Sulinger Moor and Maasener Moor” Landscape Protection Area. An area in the core of Sulinger Moor is also protected under Section 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).
The Moor Circular Route introduces visitors to the moor’s special features along a route of about 8.5 km and currently includes 14 information points. Its thematic focus makes it a distinct way to concentrate your outing on the moor. The route length and information points also provide practical guidance when planning your trip, whether you include the circular route alongside cycling routes or a visit to the windmill.
Cycling in Sulinger Moor
Locally significant cycling routes, such as “Around Sulingen,” run through the land consolidation area. The Schafdamm is a different route: it leads through Sulinger Moor, is heavily used by cyclists and forms part of a local themed cycling route for exploring the moor. These are different considerations when choosing a route. “Around Sulingen” is identified as a locally significant route in the land consolidation area; the Schafdamm’s specific appeal is that it passes through the moor and is themed around exploring it.
Labbus Windmill: technology and history
Labbus Windmill is a protected architectural and cultural monument and a witness to technological and agricultural development in the 19th and 20th centuries. The present-day mill was built in 1851 by millwright Fahlenkamp on behalf of farmer Heinrich Borchers. The windmill is part of the cultural heritage as a protected architectural and cultural monument.
On the fourth Sunday of every month, the Labbus Mill Association (MĂĽhlenverein Labbus e.V.) opens the windmill to visitors and offers individual guided tours with the machinery running. The operating machinery is therefore an explicit part of the tour experience. Check the specific date when planning your trip if you want to schedule your mill visit in advance.
More things to do in the wider Sulingen destination
In the wider Sulingen destination, additional, distinct attractions complement Lindern’s themes. Sulingen’s Park der Generationen (Park of Generations) has a water playground with slides and a BMX cycling course. This offers a different focus from moorland and milling history. At Sulingen’s 6.5-hectare town lake, you can start a walk through Mühlenhofpark and the northern Suletal valley with its millpond. The Suletal valley near Sulingen is a nature reserve and can be reached in just a few minutes, passing historic buildings along the way.
Sulingen’s architectural history also offers its own points of interest. St. Nicolai Church dates back to 1200 and acquired its present-day Neo-Gothic appearance in the 19th century. Half-timbered houses shape the townscape around the church. At the Heimatverein Sulingen e.V. museum by the town lake, a permanent exhibition shows how people used to live and work in the Sulinger Land; special exhibitions on various topics change monthly.
