Jever combines castle history with Frisian brewing culture and a distinctive landmark: the castle tower is around 57 metres high and visible across the Frisian landscape. Jever Castle is surrounded by an English garden. The castle museum explores the history of the Lordship of Jever and regional domestic culture; a guided tour of the Friesisches Brauhaus zu Jever offers a different focus. When looking for accommodation, it helps to start with a question: should your stay focus on the castle and museum, the brewery tour, or cycling in the wider Friesland region as well?

Castle History and Museum

Jever Castle dates back to a fortification built in the late 14th century and served as the seat of the rulers of Jeverland. The castle tower is among the oldest parts of the former castle complex and dates from the 14th century. At approximately 57 metres high, it is visible across the Frisian landscape.

The castle museum’s permanent exhibition provides an overview of the history of the Lordship of Jever. Exhibits are spread across all four floors of the castle. The topics on display also include regional and state history. The objects include furniture and evidence of courtly and small-town and rural domestic culture. The audience chamber retains a carved oak ceiling from the Renaissance period, dating to around 1564. The castle’s history and collection thus offer different points of interest: the development of the lordship, traces of domestic life, and a surviving Renaissance detail.

English Garden and Castle Park

Jever Castle Park is an English landscape garden of approximately four hectares, whose creation began in 1828. It has been a protected landscape since 1951. The castle is also surrounded by an English garden. The information about the fortification and the park reflects different periods: the castle’s history dates back to the late 14th century, while the landscape garden began to take shape in 1828. Together with the museum, these features add the designed landscape to the picture of Jever.

Brewery Tour: Historic Collection and Modern Production

A two-hour tour of the Friesisches Brauhaus zu Jever includes the historic brewery museum and the modern brewery. The programme includes a beer tasting and insights into production, from the brewhouse to bottling. Up to 60,000 bottles of Jever can be filled there per hour. The contrast between the historic brewery museum and the modern facility gives the tour its distinctive character. Booking arrangements may change, so check availability before your trip.

Cycling in the Wider Friesland Region

The wider Friesland region may also play a role in planning your trip. The Tour de Fries is a circular route of around 280 kilometres through the Wadden Sea region, marshes and moors; Jever is listed as a stop. The route is described as flat, well surfaced and well signposted. It has few climbs and follows roads with little traffic. Stage distances are given as 35 to 55 kilometres. This allows you to distinguish the total length of the circular route from the stated stage distances when planning your cycling around individual sections. Route conditions and signposting may change; check them before setting out.

The Friesland section of the North Sea Cycle Route offers a different type of ride: it runs from Harlesiel to Varel and connects the Frisian inland, maritime harbour towns and the vast Wadden Sea region. The cycle route is described as flat and well signposted, allowing for relaxed cycling with wide views across the Frisian landscape. Unlike the Tour de Fries circular route, this is a section with two named endpoints. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a regional circular route with specified stages and a named section of the coastal cycle route. Check the route and signposting before setting out here too.
