In Minsen, church history, knowledge of nature and a circular route through fields and meadows come together: St. Severinus and St. Jacobus Church dates back to the 13th century, the Wangerland National Park House is dedicated to the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, and Route 8 of the North Sea Nordic Fitness Sports Park also passes through Minsen. These offer different points of focus for planning your trip—from looking at species and habitats to churches and scenic paths.

Wadden Sea knowledge at the National Park House

The Wangerland National Park House in Minsen has a multimedia exhibition covering around 250 square metres about the flora and fauna of the North Sea and the diversity of the Wadden Sea. The interactive exhibition also explores Wadden Sea habitats and species, renewable energy and climate change. Nature topics are thus presented alongside questions about energy and climate.

The facility also includes an aquarium area with flatfish such as plaice, sole, flounder and dab, as well as scorpionfish and other North Sea species. Fish feedings, guided tours and microscopy courses round out the programme. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Church history and stories

St. Severinus and St. Jacobus Church in Minsen dates back to the 13th century. Minsen is also on the Wangerland Pilgrims’ Way, which passes through villages and settlements with numerous churches. Pilgrim passports to take away and maps for orientation are available at the churches along the route.

Outside the village of Minsen, in Norderaltendeich near Minsen-Förrien, stands Karin Mennen’s bronze sculpture “Seewiefken.” It was inspired by a 16th-century legend. In the wider Wangerland destination, the sculpture is considered a landmark and also features on the municipal coat of arms—a regional connection that brings together storytelling and public art.

Circular route through fields and meadows

Route 8 of the North Sea Nordic Fitness Sports Park is a circular route through fields and meadows in Förrien, Horum and Minsen. Its landscape differs from the Pilgrims’ Way, which passes through villages and settlements with churches. If you want to plan your trip around a particular focus, the routes offer different points of reference: fields and meadows on the one hand, church history on the other.

More experiences in the wider Wangerland destination

Other places in Wangerland offer their own nature and cultural experiences. The beach in Horumersiel is a green beach with a soft lawn right by the North Sea, offering an alternative to a sandy beach. In Hooksiel, the Shell Museum displays exhibits ranging from tiny snails to shells larger than a palm. The two places offer a different focus from Minsen’s exhibition and church.

The Wangermeer is in Hohenkirchen. Various hiking trails invite you to take long walks and enjoy views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island lies in its centre and can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. Many bird species, including rare ones, have settled by the lake; it also provides a habitat for a wide variety of fish.

For cycling tours through Wangerland, the junction map lets you plan more than 200 kilometres of flat routes to suit your preferences. Check the current local map before planning, as information about the route network can change. The inland lakes Wangermeer and Hooksmeer also offer water sports independent of the tides. Available activities and operating schedules may vary by season.

This can help you choose a search area based on the themes that interest you most during your trip.
