Sande lies right on Jade Bay and is surrounded by green fields and meadows. Nature, outdoor activities and local history offer different ways to explore the destination: you can focus on the salt marshes by the dike, set out on cycling and hiking trails, or learn about the history of Neustadtgödens. Which accommodation suits your trip also depends on which of these topics interests you most.

Coastal Landscape and Nature

Right in front of the dike at Cäciliengroden are salt marshes that support around 2,300 plant and animal species. The view of this landscape gives Sande’s coastal setting a tangible natural dimension. Cycling routes through Sande also pass through fields and meadows, and in places follow the Ems-Jade Canal or the dike. This lets you include a variety of landscapes in your cycling plans, without expecting a single route to cover every section.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Sande Climate Trail has twelve stops featuring historical examples of how people in and around Sande have responded to climate change. The Sande Climate Trail cycling route was created in cooperation with the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve. The trail therefore brings both cycling and the local history of how people have dealt with the climate into focus. When choosing a route, this offers a different emphasis from a ride along the canal, through fields and meadows, or along the dike.

The Sander See leisure complex includes a sandy beach, football and volleyball courts, and a designated running route. It offers a range of activities side by side: the beach, sports on the courts, and running along a marked route. Near Gut Altmarienhausen, a biosphere hiking trail follows the old moat. These activities offer different ways to spend time outdoors; choose according to what you want to include in your travel plans.

Religious and Economic History

Neustadtgödens preserves an intact village ensemble with five places of worship. The museum in the Landrichterhaus documents the village’s religious history, offering another way to explore this aspect of local history. Economic development is also linked to a distinctive tradition: the growth of Neustadtgödens was connected to linen weaving, carried out mainly by Mennonite refugees from Holland.

A regional break adds a culinary note to these discoveries: Café Marienstübchen serves homemade cake and East Frisian tea. A visit to Sande thus connects with an East Frisian tea tradition, while the historical traces in Neustadtgödens bring a very different subject to the fore.

Getting There and Finding a Place to Stay

Sande is accessible by car via the A 29, A 28 and B 436. You can also arrive by train, by boat via the Ems-Jade Canal, or via JadeWeserAirport in Mariensiel. One specific overnight option is the Altmarienhausen motorhome stopover, with 20 pitches next to the paddling and cycling station.
