Hooksiel combines North Sea beaches and water sports with local maritime history and contemporary art. At Hooksiel’s North Sea beach, you can surf, kitesurf and sail. Nearby Hooksmeer adds water skiing and an aqua park to the range of activities. This gives you different options to consider when planning your trip: time on the water, walks, exhibitions and historic sights.

Water and paths at Hooksmeer

Hooksmeer is an inland lake covering around 60 hectares near Hooksiel. Wooded shores, small coves and sailboats line the walking trail. A lock connecting to the outer harbour keeps Hooksmeer independent of the tides. The walk around Hooksmeer is 3.88 kilometres long and classed as an easy hiking route. If you want to explore the area on foot, you’ll find a specific distance and a stated difficulty level here. The view of the inland lake offers a different perspective from the North Sea beach.

Maritime history and culture

The Hooksiel Anchor Trail features historic anchors of different sizes and origins along the route. It passes through the historic town centre, past restored buildings, small galleries and cafés. The maritime theme continues at the Old Harbour, which is a protected historic site. It is home to an old customs house, a packing house and one of the last functioning sluice works. Typical maritime objects such as sea buoys, a pilot tower and a mud boat can be seen in the harbour basin.

The Hooksiel Shell Museum displays the smallest and largest shells and snails, as well as specimens from the North Sea and shells and snails from around the world. The collection ranges from very small to large forms, bringing together finds from the North Sea and international specimens. The museum is accessible and wheelchair-friendly. Guided tours are available on request.

The exhibition and events programme at Künstlerhaus Hooksiel is dedicated to introducing visitors to contemporary art. Since individual exhibitions change, it’s worth checking the current programme before your visit. This lets you combine changing art themes with Hooksiel’s permanently maritime locations and sights.

Cycle route and churches

The Wangerland Pilgrimage Route is a cycle route rich in culture that passes Hooksiel on well-signposted paths. Along the route, you can see 14 churches, including twelve Protestant and two Catholic places of worship. For your plans, this route combines cycling with a cultural look at the churches; it passes by Hooksiel. It complements the local paths and harbour sights with another way to shape your trip around a particular theme.
