Discover Wiarden
Accommodation in Wiarden
Wiarden turns the spotlight on ecclesiastical history and a distinctive landscape: St. Cosmas and Damian’s Church brings together furnishings from several centuries, while the cemetery lies on a mound surrounding the church. A playground offers a different focus. The Wangerland Pilgrimage Route is another point of reference: it runs through Wangerland, and Wiarden is one of the villages along the route where churches can be seen. This lets you give cultural discoveries and cycling different priorities when planning your stay.
Church art from several centuries
St. Cosmas and Damian’s Church in Wiarden was built in the early 13th century. Its late Gothic choir paintings depict the Apostles Peter, James and John, as well as the patron saints St. Cosmas and Damian. These motifs give the church interior a specific art-historical significance and make the dedication to the two saints visible in its furnishings.
Other works add to this picture: the furnishings include a group of figures depicting the Crucifixion, carved from oak, and twelve apostle figures from the first half of the 15th century, a pulpit dating from 1634, and an organ built in 1807/1808. The church’s oldest painted retable dates from the first quarter of the 14th century, making it older than the apostle figures. The dates span a period from the medieval history of the building to the early 19th century; the paintings, wood carvings, pulpit and organ each offer a different perspective on the furnishings.
Mound and cemetery
The cemetery lies on a mound surrounding the church. Here, the church, cemetery and mound are closely connected: the elevated location shapes the landscape setting of the historic village scene. Visitors interested in the church can also get a sense of how its surroundings are shaped by its position on the mound.
Cycling the Wangerland Pilgrimage Route
The Wangerland Pilgrimage Route is a culturally rich cycle route through Wangerland. The route passes dikes and wind turbines; along the way, it goes through 13 villages, and 14 churches can be visited. Wiarden is one of the villages along the route where churches can be seen.
The figures for villages and churches give the route a broader scope than a visit to a single place: they show how its cultural perspective extends across several locations. If you would like to include cycling in your stay, the pilgrimage route is therefore a distinct point of reference for planning your trip. The dikes and wind turbines are the landscape features explicitly mentioned along the route.
A different focus: the playground
Wiarden also has a playground with swings, a slide and a climbing frame. Benches invite you to sit and relax. Alongside the church, cemetery and cycle route, there is also a place to play and rest. If the facilities are important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit, as play equipment can change.
More to discover in the wider Wangerland destination
The wider Wangerland destination offers other places to visit, each with a different focus. In Horumersiel, the beach is a grassy area with soft lawn right by the North Sea, making it an alternative to a sandy beach. The Shell Museum in Hooksiel displays exhibits ranging from tiny snails to shells larger than the palm of your hand. Both offer a different focus from Wiarden’s church art and mound landscape.
Nature and outdoor activities also shape other options in the wider Wangerland destination: at the Wangermeer in Hohenkirchen, several walking routes offer views of the lake’s natural surroundings. A large, round island in the middle of the lake can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. In Minsen, the Wangerland National Park House offers around 250 m² of exhibition space with multimedia opportunities to actively experience and discover the Wadden Sea; the exhibition also covers renewable energy and climate protection. Check the house’s latest visitor information before your visit.
