Discover Isenbüttel through two distinct experiences: the half-timbered houses along the Tweete and the world of activities at Lake Tankumsee in the Isenbüttel collective municipality. Along the Tweete, the focus is on the townscape and architectural history; at Lake Tankumsee, the program includes a beach, water activities and climbing. This lets you choose between cultural impressions and an active stay by the water.

Half-timbered Houses and History in Isenbüttel

The Tweete is a lane used exclusively by pedestrians and cyclists. Renovated half-timbered houses line both sides, giving the street a cohesive appearance. St. Mary’s Church also offers a specific architectural detail: its tower is 42.6 meters high.

The von Campe family mausoleum has been preserved on Mausoleumsweg. After the building was transferred into municipal ownership, the municipality restored it. Local history is reflected not only in buildings: pottery, clay and iron finds from the stone furnace on Triftweg are documented at the Gifhorn Local History Museum.

Lake Tankumsee: Beach, Sports and Climbing

The Lake Tankumsee activity area is located in the Südheide landscape within the Isenbüttel collective municipality. The lake was formed in 1972 during construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal. Its surroundings include water protection areas, bird sanctuaries and the heathland of Südheide. Lake Tankumsee has a white sandy beach for swimming and extensive sunbathing lawns; sanitary and changing facilities are available to visitors.

On the water, you can use stand-up paddleboards or pedal boats. Local clubs offer opportunities to learn or take part in sailing, surfing and diving. Lake Tankumsee therefore offers various ways to spend time by the water: get active on the lake yourself or join one of the club activities.

The Lake Tankumsee adventure tower offers 36 climbing stations on three levels. There is also the FlyingFox zip line, which runs 400 meters over the lake. For children between 1 and 1.40 meters tall, there is a low ropes course with nine stations. The Lake Tankumsee landscape also has a nine-hole disc golf course.

If you are interested in birdlife, consider the ornithological walking trail around Lake Tankumsee. Information boards along the trail share interesting facts about the birds at the lake. For a break, the Seekate serves a selection of food and drinks in its restaurant and on a large terrace; the kiosk offers ice cream, snacks and other drinks.
