Neudorf-Platendorf is known as a moorland settlement and has the longest straight main street in all of Lower Saxony. At the same time, the moor museum, circular trails, and cultural venue tell different sides of the town’s story. If you would like to combine nature experiences with local history, you can weigh these highlights against one another when planning your trip.

Discover moorland history and nature

The moor museum preserves the history of the Great Moor, peat extraction, historic routes across the moor, and rewetting. These topics span the history of land use through to the development of the moor. The museum is also home to the Liliput peat excavator, a surviving testament to the history of peat extraction. It makes this history tangible through a specific object.

The plant life is another part of what you can experience on the museum grounds: you can see peat mosses and cottongrasses by the peat pits and the ditch. What you see there may vary depending on the season. This is a distinct natural feature alongside the museum’s historical themes, offering a different perspective on the Great Moor.

Circular trails and the peat railway

The Great Moor circular trail begins and ends at the moor museum and is 15 km long. It extends beyond the museum grounds; stops 17 to 20 lie directly along the trail outside the grounds. When planning, you can distinguish between the museum grounds and the stops along the longer loop. The trail connects its starting point at the museum with a route that also leads beyond the grounds.

A ride on the peat railway takes visitors through the Great Moor, where they can experience nature. This gives you different ways to explore the moor: the 15 km circular trail or a ride through the moor. When planning your activities, you can decide whether to include a marked circular route or experience the landscape by peat railway.

The Great Sassenburg Circuit runs from Lake Bernsteinsee in Stüde through the Great Moor Nature Reserve near Charlottenhof to Neudorf-Platendorf. Its described route therefore links Lake Bernsteinsee, the moorland section near Charlottenhof, and the town. Compared with the trail that starts and ends at the moor museum, it offers a different sequence of landscape and town stops for planning your trip.

Church and cultural venue

St. Thomas Church in Neudorf-Platendorf was built between 1962 and 1964. It has a freestanding, sharply pyramidal tower with a tall, copper-clad spire. The church thus combines a clearly defined construction period with a distinctive architectural form. For architecture enthusiasts, the two features are easy to distinguish: the freestanding tower and its tall, copper-clad spire.

Another cultural stop in town is the “Alte Schule” (Old School) cultural venue, which was inaugurated in November 2023. Together with St. Thomas Church, it adds cultural and architectural themes to the natural and moorland history. These different highlights help you appreciate Neudorf-Platendorf not only for its moorland landscape, but also for its local history and culture.

You can use these interests to guide your search for accommodation in Neudorf-Platendorf.
