Wesendorf has several sides to it: Wesendorf Lake lies in BĂĽltenmoor, traditional half-timbered houses and farmsteads shape the village, and cycling and hiking trails add to the leisure options. You can therefore plan your stay around what matters most to you: nature, local history or outdoor activities.

Bültenmoor and Wesendorf’s natural areas

Around Wesendorf Lake, located in Bültenmoor, old English oaks, alder carr, Märchenwiese and heathland form part of the landscape. Fuchsberg and Karls Ruhe add pine and heath landscapes, a former peat-extraction site and a bog-myrtle meadow. The interplay of water, woodland, open heath and former land use offers nature lovers a range of impressions.

The Wesendorf German National Natural Heritage site is located on a former military training ground between K7 and B4. It supports rare flora and fauna; its natural features include dry grassland and insects. This gives the landscape a distinct natural and land-use context alongside the lake, woodland and heath.

Village character and local history

Wesendorf’s “Old Village” includes a restored, cobbled chestnut avenue and distinctive oak trees. Traditional half-timbered houses and farmsteads can also be found along Celler Straße, Kastanienallee, Schulstraße and Bültenmoor. Kastanienallee thus connects a specific view of the village with one of its named streets.

A historic oil pump dating from around 1950 stands in the central roundabout area. Together with the half-timbered houses and farmsteads, it reveals different aspects of local history: both agricultural architecture and the area’s former oil production.

Trails and leisure options

Wesendorf has cycling and hiking trails, with seating and rest areas at viewpoints. Themed routes around the village are suitable for leisure cycling. When planning a specific outing, it is advisable to check the current route and local conditions before setting off.

At the DBU Wesendorf site, a walking and discovery trail crosses a former military training ground. Check current access and trail conditions before visiting. An archery course is located in the eastern part of Hammerstein Park; here too, check access and operating rules in advance.

Heideland Stadium has athletics facilities, a skate park, a beach volleyball court and a multi-purpose field. Check current access rules before using the facilities. Horst has a modern barbecue area, a playground, a fishpond and a toboggan run. As well as trails and natural areas, there are various sports and leisure options to choose from.

The wider region: Gifhorn District

Heathland, forests, moorland, rivers and lakes shape the landscape of Gifhorn District. The district is also home to Drömling, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This information describes Gifhorn at the regional level and complements the picture of Wesendorf’s own landscape.

For cyclists, Gifhorn District’s cycling network includes around 700 kilometres of leisure cycling routes, plus around 550 kilometres of everyday routes and connecting paths. Around 400 signposted junctions can be combined to plan custom routes. Check current route information before setting out on a specific tour.

The regional cuisine also offers local highlights: foods from Gifhorn District include asparagus, blueberries, Heidschnucke lamb and heath potatoes. Country cafés and farm shops bring local food traditions to life. As offerings are seasonal and opening hours can change, it is best to check in advance.

This may determine whether the local attractions or the wider cycling and nature themes are the deciding factors for your trip.
