Rosdorf combines traces of a long local history with forest paths on Wartberg and the Leine-Heide Cycle Route. Views, wildlife watching and the outdoor swimming pool add their own distinctive touches. When looking for accommodation, your preferred activities for the day can therefore be decisive: hiking, cycling, a visit to the outdoor pool or historical discoveries each point to different priorities.

Local history and traces on Wartberg

Finds made in the present-day village since around 1870 date back to the Neolithic period. A document from 1004 contains the first written mention of the place name Rosdorf. The name Wartberg is also connected with history: it refers to the medieval observation tower known as the Rosdorfer Warte. Its former location is associated with a circular earthwork in the forest.

On the southern edge of Rosdorf, Wartberg offers paths through woodland. The trails are mostly moderate; the highest point reaches 197 metres. From there, the view opens out over Rosdorf, a broad landscape with a gravel lake, and the Leine Valley towards Friedland. Wartberg is also a habitat for butterflies, insects, roe deer and numerous plant species; its natural features include flower-rich meadows and diverse birdlife.

A recurring tradition is the traditional Easter bonfire, held every year on the north side of Wartberg. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific event dates in advance.

On foot, by bike or at the outdoor pool

A hiking description from 2023 mentions a route of around 6.3 kilometres through beech forest to the Waldschwimmbad outdoor pool and on to a viewpoint overlooking Göttingen and the Leine Valley. The Leine-Heide Cycle Route offers a different kind of orientation: the signposted route passes through Rosdorf between Niedernjesa and Göttingen and mainly follows farm and forest tracks. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting off by bike.

Rosdorf outdoor swimming pool also offers a focus of its own for your stay. It is heated and has a 50-metre lane, a diving pool, a non-swimmer pool and a paddling pool. These facilities may change as a result of future renovations. The grounds of the Gemeinde Rosdorf outdoor pool also have a kiosk serving drinks and food; this offering may also change during operation. A quick check before your visit will help you adjust your plans to the latest information.

More to explore in the wider destination of Göttingen

In the wider destination of Göttingen, the Forum Wissen offers insights into ongoing research and teaching. The permanent exhibition “Spaces of Knowledge” covers 1,400 square metres. More than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen are on display across twelve rooms; the exhibition makes the processes through which knowledge is created easier to understand. Göttingen thus offers a distinct thematic focus alongside Rosdorf’s forest paths, views and historical connections.

The Old Botanical Garden of Göttingen also combines nature and history. It was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus”, or medicinal garden. Visitors can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the alpine garden. Together with the Forum Wissen, it gives the wider destination of Göttingen a different character from a stay centred on Wartberg and the landscape of Rosdorf.
