Scheden brings together a connection to Johann Joachim Quantz and two trails that pass through the town. The monument, exhibition and use of the church for concerts give cultural visits a specific focus; the European long-distance path E6 and the student trail X13 offer a different perspective on the surrounding area. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in cultural sites, trail routes or both.

Quantz, the Church and Concert Life

The Johann Joachim Quantz monument is located in a monument niche below Quantzplatz, on QuantzstraĂźe in Scheden. The bronze sculpture depicts Johann Joachim Quantz, was created by sculptor Georg Arfmann and was unveiled in 1991. Its location, material and sculptor make it possible to identify the monument precisely.

The Johann Joachim Quantz exhibition is housed in St. Mark's Church in Scheden and opened on 5 June 2004. The church is regularly used by the GSO as a concert venue and also hosts smaller concerts by the brass and church choirs. The Quantz exhibition and recurring concerts come together in one place. If you would like to attend a concert, check the latest dates in advance. If you are planning a visit specifically to see the exhibition, it is advisable to confirm current visiting arrangements.

Trails through Scheden and a Nearby Destination

The European long-distance path E6 runs through Tiefenbrunn, Scheden, Hann. MĂĽnden, Dahlenrode and Witzenhausen. The student trail X13 also passes through Tiefenbrunn, Scheden and Hann. MĂĽnden, with Spiekershausen listed as another place along the route. Comparing the places listed is useful when planning your route: Dahlenrode and Witzenhausen appear on the E6, while Spiekershausen is on the X13. Both trails explicitly include Scheden in their routes, but differ in the other places mentioned.

Near Scheden, to the east of the town, lies the Wetenborn church ruins. They are the remains of a church in a medieval village that was abandoned around 1400; the ruins have been excavated and restored. From Scheden, they can be reached via a paved farm track, the Apfelbaumallee, followed by a footpath. The route therefore begins on the farm track and continues on foot to the ruins.

More Culture and Nature in the Wider Göttingen Destination

In the wider Göttingen destination, the Forum Wissen offers insights into ongoing research and teaching. Its permanent exhibition, “Rooms of Knowledge,” covers 1,400 square metres and allows visitors to explore how knowledge is created. The twelve “Rooms of Knowledge” contain more than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen. While Scheden offers a specific local connection through the Quantz monument and exhibition, the Forum Wissen focuses on research and the creation of knowledge.

The Göttingen Municipal Museum has been housed in the Hardenberger Hof, the last surviving aristocratic palace in Göttingen, since 1897. Until further notice, it is showing the presentation “City. Power. Faith. Göttingen in the 16th Century.” It is advisable to check the current exhibition status before your trip. Guided tours of the permanent exhibitions and the respective special exhibitions are available for groups and school classes; they should enquire about booking arrangements in advance.

The Old Botanical Garden in Göttingen also complements the focus of the wider destination. It was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus,” or medicinal garden. Visitors can explore historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the Alpine garden. The garden’s history and its different areas combine botanical impressions with a historical perspective.
