Discover Hoogstede: Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Hoogstede
Hoogstede offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails of different lengths, a 19th-century church, and memorial sites with their own histories. This lets you make outdoor activity and cultural history the focus of your stay.
Two hiking trails, two distances
The green hiking trail is about 11 kilometres long. It leads from the village square, past the Möllenkamp development, towards Scheerhorn. The red hiking trail is shorter at about 6 kilometres: from the village square, it runs along Molkereistraße to Bathorner Diek. Both routes therefore start at the village square, but differ considerably in their approximate length and course.
Comparing the route lengths, the red trail is roughly half as long as the green one. The hiking trails marked out by the local heritage association in and around Hoogstede can also be cycled. If needed, check the local signs before setting out.
Building history and remembrance
The Catholic Church of St. Boniface in Hoogstede is a brick building in the Rundbogenstil (round-arch style), dating from 1859. Its year of construction and architectural style give the church a specific place in local history and offer a point of interest for anyone interested in architecture.
Three Peace Oaks were planted on Schwarzen Weg in 1913. Together with the church built in 1859, they represent two distinct historical points of reference in Hoogstede: a church building on the one hand, and a group of trees with a recorded planting date on the other. The Scholten-Meilink farm in the municipality of Hoogstede is also home to a memorial site for the former Arkel Chapel.
Tree planting and activities at the farm
At the Hoagsteeder Familiengoarn in Hoogstede, you can plant a tree for a personal occasion or simply without any special occasion. The annual planting date may change, so check it before making plans.
At the Scholten-Meilink farm in the municipality of Hoogstede, children feed animals at birthday parties and play in the straw in the play barn. If you would like to include this birthday activity in your plans, check availability directly with the farm.
Nature in the municipality and Grafschaft Bentheim
The Vechte Altarm Kalle nature reserve lies in the Kalle district within the municipality of Hoogstede, in the Grafschaft Bentheim district. For a broader sense of the landscape, take a look at Grafschaft Bentheim: heathland, raised and lowland bogs, wooded ridges, and the Vechte river valley alternate across the region. Itterbecker Heide is also one of the nature reserves in Grafschaft Bentheim; it covers around 85 hectares.
Kunstwegen is an open-air museum of contemporary art, nature, and history in Grafschaft Bentheim. It stretches for more than 180 kilometres through the Vechte Valley; more than 80 sculpture projects line the route, and their number may change. This offers a different way to experience the region than its local hiking trails and memorial sites.
For a change of theme within Grafschaft Bentheim, visit Nordhorn Zoo. It covers 12 hectares and is home to more than 2,500 animals from 100 species. Many enclosures are designed to be entered by visitors, including two petting zoos; animal numbers and enclosure arrangements may change. Those looking at cycling routes on a regional scale can also consider the approximately 220-kilometre main route of the Grafschafter Fietsentour, which passes through every municipality in the district. Route details may change.
When looking for accommodation in Hoogstede, it helps to decide on your priorities in advance: should the local trails and historical sites shape your trip, or would you also like to include other destinations in Grafschaft Bentheim?
