Neuenhaus combines waterways with city history and active discoveries. In the municipality of Neuenhaus, the Vechte, Dinkel and Lee rivers shape a landscape of mills. The MĂĽhlenkolk in Neuenhaus once served as a harbor and reflects the historic use of water. The town also offers walks, cycling, culture and activities on the water.

Experience City History and Culture

The town hall, which is more than 200 years old, reflects Dutch architectural influences. Readings, concerts and exhibitions are held there. The 2026 town walking tour program includes guided tours offering historical, cultural and anecdotal perspectives, as well as insights into Jewish life. Check the dates and availability before your visit; both may change.

The Neuenhaus Stiegengang is a 3.91-kilometer circular route rated very easy. At 20 stops, QR codes that you can access with your smartphone explain local history and architecture. You can extend the tour to include seven Stolpersteine and a historical arch. These commemorate the stories and fate of Jewish families in the Niedergrafschaft during the Nazi era. Route information and digital content may be updated; check both before setting out.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

The hand-operated “Haal over” ferry takes visitors and cyclists across the Dinkel from one bank to the other. The crossing is 72 meters long; up to twelve people can travel together with their bicycles. You can reach the landing by car, bicycle or on foot. The walking and cycling path runs behind Dinkelbad Neuenhaus. Check the ferry’s current operating options before your trip.

The Dinkelstein Route can be explored by bicycle. Four amateur artists from Neuenhaus and Nordhorn contributed sculptures to the route. Another way to enjoy the water is on canoe tours starting at the boathouse on Dinkelsee, which is used by Wassersportfreunde Neuenhaus e. V. After a bike ride or hike, families can cool off at Dinkelbad. Check the pool’s current availability before your visit.

Planning Your Trip

Rail travel is also part of the area’s arrival story: the Bad Bentheim–Neuenhaus line was reopened to passenger traffic and opened in 2019. If you are planning a train journey, check the current timetable in advance.

There are different options for planning your day: the Stiegengang combines a walk with digital explanations of history and architecture; you can explore the Dinkelstein Route by bicycle and take in the contributed sculptures along the way. This makes it easy to decide whether to focus on city history and a circular walk, or on cycling and water-based activities.
