Discover Hittfeld
Accommodation in Hittfeld
Discover Hittfeld through its distinctive cultural landmarks and historically themed routes. The listed windmill, St. Mauritius Church and two cultural heritage trails each offer a different perspective. You can focus your stay on individual sights or explore Hittfeld on foot and by bicycle. If you would like to look beyond Hittfeld, the wider Seevetal destination offers further nature and culture experiences.
Windmill and St. Mauritius Church
The listed windmill dates from 1875 and is a landmark of Hittfeld. Its construction date provides a tangible starting point for exploring local history. Together with the historic circular routes, it forms a distinct focus for anyone interested in how the town has developed over time.
Hittfeld’s St. Mauritius Church also contains notable historic furnishings. It houses a bronze baptismal font dating from 1438, with older supporting figures. The church also has a Furtwängler organ. These two features offer different reasons to explore the church’s history: the baptismal font for its age and supporting figures, and the organ as another defining element of the church.
Explore Hittfeld on foot and by bicycle
The Hittfelder Dorfrunde is a historic circular trail with 26 information boards explaining what Hittfeld used to look like. The Bahnhofsrunde, around Hittfeld station, is also focused on cultural heritage and is suitable for walking and cycling. The two routes therefore have different focuses: the Dorfrunde explores the town’s former appearance, while the Bahnhofsrunde combines history with activity on foot or by bike. Route details may be updated; check the current route before setting out.
The Seeve Cycle Route also offers a way to include Hittfeld in a longer cycling stage: its third stage runs from Horster Mühle via Lindhorst to Hittfeld. The routes mentioned differ mainly in whether they focus on Hittfeld’s local history or help you plan a stage with named starting and intermediate places. To choose, it is worth checking the relevant route and the latest route information.
Landscape and culture in the wider Seevetal destination
The wider Seevetal destination includes the Lower Seeve Lowlands, a characteristic part of the Elbe marshes. The soils also vary by location: clay soils shape the landscape in the north; closer to the Elbe, the soil is also mixed with sand, while extensive areas of lowland peat have formed in the south, farther from the river. Between the Seeve and the Elbe, recreational activities in Seevetal include walks through woods and meadows, as well as canoeing and cycling tours. The Lower Seeve Lowlands nature reserve can be reached by train via Maschen station; check the timetable before travelling.
In the same wider destination, the Hallonen circular trail passes through Maschen, Horst and Hörsten. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle; along the way, it passes historic sites, old farmsteads, monuments and rare natural features. This gives it a different focus from the Hittfeld circular routes: its course is shaped by several places and a variety of historic and natural points of interest.
The Wassermühle Karoxbostel heritage complex in the municipality of Seevetal brings together buildings from different periods. These include the thatched main house, built in 1817 as a four-post timber-frame building; the three-storey mill building, added in 1893 by millwright Pätzmann from Winsen; and the sawmill, completed in 1900. The sculpture park in Seevetal-Ramelsloh displays kinetic works exclusively. The Ramelsloh Ansgar circular trail has ten stops and illustrates how Ramelsloh has changed over time.
