In Harburg district, the landscape stretches from the Elbe marshes through the Harburg Hills and the Northern Heath to the LĂĽneburg Heath. Amid expansive heathland, nature experiences and cultural sites, you can choose different focuses for your trip.

Heath Trails and Cycling Tours

A dense network of cycling routes runs through Harburg district, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycle paths. For hiking, the Heidschnuckenweg, opened in 2012, offers a different scale: it runs for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through the districts of Harburg, Heidekreis and Celle, and across more than 30 large and small heathland areas of the Northern and Southern Heath. The trail is divided into 13 stages and supplemented by twelve heath loops. These range from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres in length. This gives you a choice of different distances, from the long-distance hiking trail to one of the shorter loops. You can choose the option that suits your stay based on your planned hiking days and preferred distance.

The region also offers a distinct approach to planning cycling trips: the signposted route network extends throughout the district. If your trip is centred mainly on cycling, you can take this into account when choosing accommodation; for hiking, the stages and heath loops of the Heidschnuckenweg offer additional guidance.

Nature Parks and Wildlife

The Schwarze Berge Wildlife Park in Rosengarten features a 45-metre-high Elbblick Tower. It is set in a 50-hectare park with hills, valleys and lakes. The LĂĽneburg Heath Wildlife Park in Nindorf-Hanstedt offers a different experience: more than 1,200 animals live there, including Siberian tigers, wolves and snow leopards. The two places represent different nature experiences: a park landscape with a distinctive tower at one, and an extensive range of wildlife at the other.

At the LĂĽneburg Heath barefoot park in Egestorf, visitors can walk barefoot across a variety of natural surfaces. Numerous activity stations, including scent boxes and a tree telephone, add to the route. For a group outing, this offers a different pace from a longer hike: here, nature can be discovered through changing surfaces and individual stations. If you like to vary your days, you can include these nature experiences in your plans alongside hiking or cycling routes.

Museums and Unique Cultural Sites

The “Museum Kiekeberg” bus stop is right outside the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum; it is served by several HVV bus routes. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting out. The Kunststätte Bossard museum in Harburg district preserves Expressionist murals and interior furnishings in their original context. The preserved connection between painting and interior design makes it especially interesting for visitors who are interested not only in individual works of art, but also in how they fit into their surroundings.

Choosing the Right Focus for Your Stay

For a trip focused on hiking, the stages and heath loops of varying lengths provide practical planning options; cyclists will find a dense route network in the district. If you want to focus on nature parks and wildlife, you can choose between the landscapes of the Schwarze Berge Wildlife Park, the wildlife at the Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park and the natural-surface stations at the barefoot park. Culture enthusiasts have further destinations in the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum and Kunststätte Bossard.
