Bockenem: Half-Timbered Houses, Culture and Cycling
Accommodation in Bockenem
Bockenem is a historic half-timbered town where culture, local history and outdoor activities each offer a different perspective. The Kulturladen is in the centre, right by Buchholzmarkt. Together with the Kulturbüro, the Kulturscheune and the Romantischer Hof, it forms a cultural centre with no commercial purpose. In Bockenem, various aspects of cultural life sit alongside architectural history, events and outdoor activities.
Culture and Events in Bockenem
The Kulturladen’s volunteer team organises cultural events between March and November. If a particular event is important to your trip, check the specific dates in advance. Bockenem also hosts the modern-day Hanseatic Days at regular intervals. They offer another reason to explore the town and its tradition of hosting events; however, the intervals between them are no substitute for checking the dates for a specific visit.
Clockmaking History and Historic Buildings
The Museum der Zeit features an extensive exhibition of tower clocks made by the J.F. Weule tower clock factory and bell foundry. The collection gives a cultural visit a distinctive technical focus. Those interested in older architectural history can explore another side of the town at the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle, also known as St. Spiritus: originally, it was the chapel of the hospital founded in 1351, which later became the Beguine House.
The Sankt Pankratiuskirche and the nearby Superintendentur are also part of Bockenem’s historic character. Both have been described as attractions for travellers passing through and summer visitors. Together with the half-timbered town and the Kulturladen, these places reveal different facets of Bockenem’s cultural character, from the history of individual buildings to events and exhibitions.
Bürgerpark and the Ambergau Cycle Route
Bürgerpark lies in the heart of Bockenem and offers extensive green spaces, ponds and benches. Its hilly terrain is ideal for sledging in winter. There is also exercise equipment at 14 stations for simple gymnastics and fitness exercises. The park offers a different experience from the cultural venues, with green spaces, exercise and a break outdoors at its heart.
The Ambergau Cycle Route also passes through Bockenem. The consistently signposted route is 32 kilometres long and runs from Seesen via Rhüden, Bornum, Bockenem and Henneckenrode to Holle, ending in Derneburg. When planning your ride, it is important to consider the entire route, not just the section through Bockenem. Check the current signage and route before setting out.
Another Look at the Hildesheim Destination
The wider Hildesheim destination also offers a regional perspective on the landscape and architecture. The Hildesheim region lies between the Hildesheim Börde, the Leine Uplands and the foothills of the Harz Mountains. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld is a striking architectural landmark: it is considered the first truly modern building and the original work of modern industrial architecture. The factory houses a UNESCO visitor centre with interactive exhibits on the history of the World Heritage Site and the core ideas of the World Heritage Convention. This places Bockenem’s cultural and historical themes in a broader regional context.
