Bad Salzdetfurth: Salt History, Half-Timbered Houses and Trails
Accommodation in Bad Salzdetfurth
Bad Salzdetfurth combines a historic old town with a landscape shaped by a narrow valley and the heights of the Hildesheim Forest and Sothenberg. Half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries line the Lamme. There is also the spa park, the town’s salt history and marked circular hiking trails – different facets of the town to explore as you discover the area.
Discover the Old Town and Spa Park
The half-timbered houses along the Lamme give the old town a distinct historic character. The Water and Salt Trail adds to this impression with eight information panels located in Bad Salzdetfurth’s spa park and old town. This brings the subject of salt to life in both places, while the half-timbered houses draw attention to the town’s history.
There are two brine towers in the spa park, both more than 260 years old. Visitors can stroll there, with the historic structures adding a striking feature to the park. If you’d like to set aside time for a dedicated activity, the salt cave offers a 45-minute visit. You can relax on loungers or a salt bed.
Salt and Mining from Different Perspectives
The Bad Salzdetfurth Mining and Salt Museum displays exhibits on mining and the history of Bad Salzdetfurth, as well as minerals and rocks from every continent. The Mining and Salt Museum at the salt works, by contrast, focuses on the mineral’s journey from underground shafts to the surface; the exhibit is designed for the whole family to experience. Both topics give your trip a tangible connection to the town’s mining and salt history.
There’s also a dedicated way for children to explore the old town: the scavenger hunt for kids, originally developed for the Old Town Festival, is now a permanent offering. In the spa park, Adventure Golf features 18 different holes. Together with the Water and Salt Trail’s information panels, these offer different ways to engage with the town – from its history to a game in the park.
Choose Circular Hiking Trails by Distance
Ten marked circular hiking trails are signposted in Bad Salzdetfurth. They are between three and 13 kilometres long and start and finish at the Kulturbahnhof. The range of distances gives you a practical way to choose: you can take your preferred route length into account without assuming all the circular trails are the same length. Their shared starting and ending point is another clear reference point when choosing a route.
More to Explore in the Broader Hildesheim Destination
If you’d like to explore architectural themes as well as Bad Salzdetfurth’s salt and half-timbered history, you can also consider the broader Hildesheim destination. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld is considered the first truly modern building and the seminal work of modern industrial architecture. It houses a UNESCO visitor centre with interactive stations about the history of the World Heritage Site and the core ideas of the World Heritage Convention.
Hildesheim itself also offers notable subjects in art and architectural history: St. Mary’s Cathedral houses the Bernward Doors, a masterpiece of bronze casting. St. Michael’s is a three-aisled basilica in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque or early Romanesque style. St. Michael’s was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, together with St. Mary’s Cathedral. These regional cultural attractions differ markedly from Bad Salzdetfurth’s local focus on salt, the old town and trails.
The broader Hildesheim destination also includes the Bike and Outdoor Park at Ortberg in Bad Salzdetfurth. It has been open for public use since 2014. A practice course lets beginners improve their mountain-bike control before tackling more challenging routes with obstacles. The facilities also include ramps, North Shore features and singletrack trails for training. Check whether the park is currently open before setting off.
