Negenborn: Hooptal, Hiking Trails and Monastery History
Accommodation in Negenborn
Negenborn lies in a valley basin at the entrance to the Hooptal. Burgberg, Vogler and the Odfeld Plateau surround the village and shape the landscape. Hiking trails, the history of Amelungsborn Monastery and the barbecue area above the village offer different reasons to stay. You can consider Negenborn as a stop on a longer hiking tour, plan a monastery visit arranged in advance, or focus on spending time together outdoors. The accommodation you are looking for therefore also depends on whether hiking, culture or a shared stay is your priority.
The Valley and Getting Your Bearings
The L 580 runs northwest from Negenborn through the Forstbach Valley towards the neighboring village of Golmbach. The Negenborn bypass on the B 64 opened to traffic on 14 April 2023. If you are arriving by car, check the current traffic arrangements before setting off.
Hiking Routes of Different Lengths
The 22-kilometer Raabe Hiking Trail, Day 2, runs from Stadtoldendorf to Holzminden and passes through Negenborn. It reaches the village via the Hooptal along the Forstbach stream. Negenborn is therefore part of a longer hiking route between two towns. Check the current route information before setting off.
On the Weserbergland Trail, there is a turnoff after 3 kilometers; from there, it is another 200 meters to Amelungsborn Monastery. This information answers a different planning question from the 22 kilometers: it describes the turnoff and the section that follows to the monastery, not the total length of a second tour. This makes it easier to distinguish the longer route through Negenborn from the stretch of trail to the monastery.
Monastery History and Visiting
Amelungsborn Monastery is on the B 64 between Negenborn and Eschershausen in the district of Holzminden. The monastery church is a Romanesque, three-aisled basilica; its foundation dates back to a donation in 1129. The building was extended in the Gothic style around 1350. It is considered the second-oldest Cistercian foundation in Lower Saxony. The Romanesque structure and Gothic extension reveal two distinct building phases in the monastery’s history.
A visit can be arranged by prior agreement with the resident sacristan. The village’s history also goes back a long way: a late medieval pilgrimage associated with a host miracle at a chapel is part of Negenborn’s history.
The Barbecue Area Above the Village
The Negenborn barbecue area is above the village, about 800 meters from the main road. A small forest surrounds it, and it is considered a peaceful spot. The grounds are suitable for going for a walk and playing together as a group. When planning an outdoor stay, the surrounding grounds are therefore just as relevant as the barbecue area itself.
The shelter can accommodate around 30 people. There is also an open fire area with seating and a larger grill. If you are planning to use the site with a group, check availability and the details on site in advance.
