Bunde offers several ways to explore its history and landscape: the Bunder Mill tells the story of its construction and expansion, the Evangelical Reformed Church stands in the village centre, and historic landmarks are signposted in Dollart Nature and Culture Park. The municipality of Bunde also offers a tour with a return journey by bicycle, as well as a moorland area. Architecture, active exploration and nature thus come together in different ways.

The architecture of the church and mill

The Bunder Mill was built in 1869 and expanded in 1911 into a four-storey gallery Dutch mill with an octagonal superstructure and a brick base. These two dates make its construction history especially clear: the original building was followed by a significant expansion. Its distinctive design gives the mill a unique architectural character.

The Evangelical Reformed Church of Bunde, formerly St Martin’s Church, is located in the village centre. It is one of East Frisia’s most notable cross-shaped churches. Its nave was built in the early 13th century; the other sections were constructed in several phases. The transept and rectangular choir display elements of the Romano-Gothic style.

The two buildings make different impressions: the 1911 expansion marked a significant turning point for the mill, while the church has a longer construction history spanning several phases. Architecture enthusiasts will therefore find more in Bunde than just a single date to explore.

Historic traces in Dollart Nature and Culture Park

Old dikes, mills, dike culverts and other historic landmarks are signposted in Dollart Nature and Culture Park. Visitors can explore and see these landmarks by bicycle. This gives the park a different focus from viewing individual buildings: here, the emphasis is on several historic traces across the landscape.

The Dollart Museum is located at Rheiderlandstraße 3 in Bunde. Its precise address adds another cultural point of interest in the village alongside the buildings and the park.

More experiences in the municipality of Bunde

The paddle-and-pedal station is located in Ditzumerverlaat within the municipality of Bunde. From there, for example, you can take a tour to Ditzum and return by bicycle. This offers a different focus for planning a trip than exploring historic buildings: instead of individual examples of architecture, the emphasis here is on an outing that combines different modes of transport.

The Wymeer landscape conservation area is located in the municipality of Wymeer. Its main purpose is to preserve and develop a biologically active raised-bog habitat and to improve and expand habitats for endangered bog plants. The conservation effort therefore concerns both the bog as a habitat and the habitats of its plants.

A wooden boardwalk lets visitors experience the bog area on dry ground, reaching as far as its wet areas without disturbing the sensitive bog vegetation. This makes the connection with nature tangible: the path leads into the bog area while protecting its vegetation. Together with the buildings and the signposted historic landmarks, this offers a choice between cultural history, exploring by bicycle and a bog landscape.

When looking for accommodation in Bunde, your preferred focus for the trip can be a useful starting point: Would you mainly like to explore architectural history, discover historic traces by bicycle, or experience the bog landscape? The places and activities mentioned offer different ways to pursue these interests.
