Discover Boen: Three historic buildings on the main street
Accommodation in Boen
Boen is associated with three historic buildings on the main street: a Gulfhaus, a Gulfhaus with residential and agricultural buildings, and a combined residential and agricultural building. Together, they illustrate different rural architectural styles. The comparison ranges from the Gulfhaus, through the combination of residential and agricultural buildings, to a combined residential and agricultural building. For travellers interested in architectural history, these are three tangible examples, rather than limiting the focus to a single type of house.
Nature watching at the Dollart
On the edge of the Dollart tidal flats, the Kiekkaaste observation tower offers views of wading birds, ducks and marsh harriers, and sometimes seals. The tower is accessible at any time; the unpaved footpath may be flooded during spring tides. Check the tide conditions before your visit. This lets you combine nature watching with observing the changing conditions along the path.
Gulfhof and the history of the Dollart
The Dollart Nature and Culture Park includes an East Frisian Gulfhof dating from the 18th century, which has been converted into the Dollart Museum. The museum covers the development of the Dollart and the history of dike building. This takes visitors from the historic building to the changing Dollart landscape and the construction of its dikes. Those interested in regional history will find not only architectural styles here, but also the development of a landscape as a subject.
Bunde: windmill, church and historic landmarks
In Bunde, the Bunder Mill was built in 1869 and enlarged in 1911 into a four-storey gallery Dutch windmill with an octagonal structure and a brick base. The two dates mark different construction phases: the original building was followed by its expansion into the described form of windmill. The structure and base give the building its distinctive appearance.
The Evangelical Reformed Church of Bunde, formerly St Martin’s Church, is also an important landmark in the local architectural history. It stands in the centre of the village and is one of East Frisia’s most noteworthy cross-shaped churches. Its nave dates from the early 13th century; the other parts were built in several phases. Elements of the Romanesque Gothic style can be seen in the transept and rectangular choir. The church thus offers a different historical perspective from the mill: here, the focus is on construction phases and stylistic elements.
The Dollart Museum is located at Rheiderlandstraße 3 in Bunde. As opening arrangements may vary, check current visiting options in advance. In the Dollart Nature and Culture Park, old dikes, mills, sluices through the dikes and other historic landmarks are signposted. Visitors can explore and see them in the park by bicycle. Alongside the museum and architecture, the focus also includes historic landmarks outdoors and exploring them by bicycle.
When looking for accommodation in Boen, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to centre your visit on the historic buildings on the main street, are you especially interested in nature watching at the Dollart, or would you like to explore the mill, church and park history in Bunde?
