Barendorf combines a local history dating back to the 9th century with St. Matthew’s Church, a listed estate park and cycle routes with practical connections. A small farming village developed into a modern municipality with new residential areas. The town therefore brings long-standing historical threads together with present-day routes through the landscape. For planning your trip, this offers two distinct focal points: cultural and historical discoveries, and time spent cycling. Deciding which of these should shape your stay is a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.

Traces from Several Centuries

Barendorf is considered the oldest datable settlement in the Ostheide; a mention from the 9th century marks its early place in local history. Another precise record dates from 1291: Duke Otto of Lüneburg reacquired Barendorf in exchange for three measures of salt from the Lüneburg saltworks and transferred the town to Lüne Abbey. This also connects the town’s history with the Lüneburg saltworks and the religious institutions of the time.

In the Winsen tax register of 1450, Barendorpe was listed as a village with seven Hakenhöfe (farms assessed according to the size of their ploughland) and one Kote (smallholding), and was described as having a Wendish character. In 1529, Barendorf became the seat of the Vogtei of the same name in the Lüne district; 20 villages and two other holdings were administered from there. The entries show different aspects of the town’s history: first its description as a village, and later its role as an administrative centre.

Estate Park: Garden History and Visitor Requirements

Barendorf Estate Park is a historic landscape park featuring rare elements of reform garden design and is a protected historic monument. Its history also includes a specific change: a large bathing pond was created when the park was redesigned in 1919. The estate park thus brings together a historic garden monument and a trace of its past design.

The estate park is privately owned; visitors are asked to register in advance. If the park is part of your travel plans, arrange your visit beforehand and check the current visiting arrangements.

St. Matthew’s Church: Bright Interior and Seasonal Opening

St. Matthew’s Church in Barendorf was built in 1964/65. Its side windows give the interior a particularly bright feel. Compared with the town’s older history, the church is a more recent architectural feature. The church is reliably open from April to October; check its opening arrangements before your visit. Those interested in 20th-century architecture as well as the town’s older history will find another point of reference here.

Cycling Routes with Different Connections

According to the infrastructure report dated October 15, 2025, a 2.5-kilometre route connects Barendorf with State Road 221 and closes a gap in the district’s cycle network. The route is 2.5 metres wide, built of concrete and runs through a forested area. Check route conditions before setting off.

In addition, continuous cycle paths run along County Road 28 from Vastorf through Barendorf to Scharnebeck. This provides two different options for planning: a 2.5-kilometre connection to State Road 221 and a cycle route linking Vastorf, Barendorf and Scharnebeck. When deciding how much cycling to include in your stay, you can consider whether a single connection or a route between several towns better suits your plans.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

Barendorf has local shops and essential everyday services, including doctors, the municipal administration and a Sparkasse savings bank. These are as much a part of the town as its historic sites and cycle routes. The relevant visiting arrangements are important: advance registration is required for the privately owned estate park, and St. Matthew’s Church is reliably open from April to October.
