Discover Alfhausen through its church complex, landscape and paths starting in the town centre. Nearby, the Lake Alfsee area adds bodies of water, bird habitats and a circular trail to the picture. This gives you a range of starting points for planning your trip, from local history to nature experiences.

Church, Kirchhöfnerei and Heeker Klause

St. John’s Church dates back to the 13th century. Its furnishings include Gothic elements, among them the Bentheim baptismal font and the Madonna of the Rays from 1517. The Madonna thus adds a precisely dated feature to the church complex. Around the church lies the Kirchhöfnerei: a small row of closely adjoining houses that created a fortified churchyard. The church and row of houses are therefore part of a shared architectural history.

Another historic site is the Heeker Klause, built in 1818 and counted among Alfhausen’s sights. It continues to be used for May devotions and the annual Rogation service. Its significance thus encompasses both its year of construction and its ongoing religious use.

Hiking, forests and far-reaching views

The cultural landscape around Alfhausen is shaped by the Hase glacial valley and the hills of Heiligenberg. Numerous hiking and cycling routes lead from the town centre into the varied landscape. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the type of activity and the natural setting: the routes offer opportunities for hiking and cycling, while Heiligenberg, with its gentle hills and dense forests, invites you to hike and unwind. At Hexenboll, you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views across the landscape. This lets you focus on exercise and woodland or on the views.

The Lake Alfsee area nearby

Near Alfhausen, the “Alfsee” EU Special Protection Area lies in the Hase lowlands. It consists of two flood-retention basins, completely surrounded by embankments. The permanent water surface provides a suitable year-round habitat for numerous waterbird species. For nature enthusiasts, the landscape here is both a protected area and a habitat.

The TERRA.track Alfsee circles the Alfhausen-Rieste reserve basin and offers views of the surrounding landscape and the main basin. This also makes the area accessible via a specific circular trail. The Alfsee Nature Conservation and Education Centre houses a 400 m² interactive exhibition for tourists, local residents, school classes, groups and associations. In addition to the natural environment itself, the centre offers an educational resource that explicitly caters to a variety of visitor groups.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When looking for accommodation in Alfhausen, these different themes can serve as a first filter. Consider whether your trip will focus primarily on the church complex and local history, hiking and cycling routes starting in the town centre, or nature in the nearby area. Lake Alfsee brings together a bird protection area, circular trail and exhibition, while the church, Kirchhöfnerei and Heeker Klause offer other focal points for planning your trip. If you are weighing up different interests with your fellow travellers, you can use these distinctions to decide whether Alfhausen suits the mix of culture and nature you are looking for.
