Atter offers a range of ways to plan your trip: the man-made Attersee, cycling and hiking trails, and historical topics relating to Gut Leye and Baracke 35. You can focus on water and outdoor activities, or explore the area’s architectural and cultural history.

Attersee and trails

Attersee was created through sand extraction for the construction of the Hansalinie. Its history therefore begins with an artificially created body of water. Today, it is one of the official bathing waters in the city and district of Osnabrück. Bathing water monitoring is carried out seasonally—a useful point to consider when planning your trip if you want to make the lake the focus of your stay.

The many cycling and hiking trails in the Attersee recreational area offer another way to spend time actively. Water and trails cater to different interests: you may want to plan your trip primarily around the lake, or perhaps focus instead on activities on foot or by bike.

Gut Leye: history, buildings and woodland

The history of Gut Leye dates back to the 15th century. At that time, the Crosier brothers of Osterberg Monastery acquired several individual farms in the farming community of Leye in Atter, combined them into a large estate and practised monastic agriculture there. The two-storey manor house with its outbuildings was built in 1703 in the Renaissance style. The chapel at Gut Leye dates from 1906.

These facts offer different points of interest: the estate’s origins tell a story of agriculture and monastic life, while the manor house and chapel bring its architectural history to life. Gut Leye is surrounded by extensive woodland, and you can go for walks around the estate. This lets you combine an interest in historic buildings with time in the woods, without turning the individual themes into a fixed route.

Baracke 35 and the idea of peace

Baracke 35 represents a more recent historical focus. The wooden barracks were originally built between 1935 and 1937 as Wehrmacht barracks. In 2009, Baracke 35 was listed as a historic monument by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. The site hosts events that promote the idea of peace. If you would like to plan around a specific event, check the relevant programme separately.

Atter’s historical themes are therefore quite distinct: Gut Leye is an estate dating back to the 15th century, with a Renaissance-style manor house and a chapel from 1906. Baracke 35 offers insight into the history of the 1930s and a cultural focus on the idea of peace. Which of these perspectives interests you most may shape your stay.

Other things to explore in the wider destination of OsnabrĂĽck

The wider destination of Osnabrück offers additional, distinct nature and cultural experiences. The Botanical Garden of Osnabrück University opened in 1984 and is located in two former quarries on Westerberg. In the second, more natural quarry, native plants and animals are reclaiming this urban habitat. The rainforest house presents a section of the Amazon Basin’s lowland rainforest. The Botanical Garden’s Green School offers guided tours and activity programmes focused on education for sustainable development; programme availability may vary.

Osnabrück’s history of peace offers another distinct focus. The Peace Hall in the historic town hall was one of the two venues of the Peace of Westphalia. Alongside Münster, peace treaties to end the Thirty Years’ War were signed here. In 1643, St. Mary’s Church in Osnabrück served as a secret meeting place for Swedish and Danish envoys. They met there for confidential discussions to avoid being observed by spies.
