Grasberg brings together the history of the moor farmers, a special organ and cycling routes of very different lengths. At Findorffhof, the former life in the moor villages comes to life through a historic farmstead; in Findorff Church, there is an organ with a history dating back to 1693/94. Other attractions include the Dörfergarten, open to visitors seasonally, a weekly market and cultural events. When planning your trip, you can choose between sightseeing, a shorter cycling tour and longer routes through moorland and coastal landscapes.

Cycling: different route lengths

Grasberg has a 23.3-kilometre cycling tour called “In Findorff’s Footsteps”. The “From Teufelsmoor to the Wadden Sea” route is on a very different scale: it connects the lowlands of Teufelsmoor with the coastal landscape and the Wadden Sea, follows parts of the Hamme, Oste, Elbe and Weser rivers, and stretches for around 450 kilometres. The route is mostly flat and easy to cycle.

Comparing the lengths helps put things in perspective: there is a clearly defined tour on the one hand and an extensive route option on the other. This can help you decide whether to include a single cycling tour in your stay or consider a longer regional route.

Findorffhof: A glimpse into the history of the moor villages

Findorffhof is an old farmstead complex typical of the region’s moor villages in the 19th century. The ensemble includes a farmhouse, a barn, a bakehouse, a wattle shed, a cart shed, a bleaching house, a fire station and a peat-barge shed. The old half-timbered buildings offer a glimpse into the lives and work of the moor farmers.

The main house is set up as a museum and also serves as a cultural meeting place. The barn displays old agricultural tools and machinery. The different buildings make a visit to the farmstead more than just a look at a single historic house: they offer a chance to encounter different aspects of everyday farming life in the past. Visits to Findorffhof are possible by prior arrangement only.

Dörfergarten and the history of the organ

The Dörfergarten features an almost-to-scale representation of Grasberg. A mosaic with the municipal coat of arms and wooden information boards about the individual villages complement the model. You can visit the garden from Easter to October; it is dismantled for the winter. So if you would like to include it in your plans, bear in mind its seasonal opening period.

Another historic trace leads to Grasberg’s Findorff Church. It is home to an organ that Arp Schnitger originally built in 1693/94 for the Hamburg orphanage church. In Grasberg, this links a tangible piece of North German musical and craftsmanship history with a visit to a local church.

Autumn open studios, weekly market and guided tours

At the annual Grasberg Autumn Open Studios, participating artists have opened their studios to visitors once a year since 2012. If you would like to plan your stay around this cultural event, check the dates before you travel.

The weekly market offers fruit and vegetables, speciality cheeses, honey and baked goods. Since the market day and selection may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. Guided tours are offered in and around Grasberg, through Teufelsmoor and in the artists’ villages of Worpswede and Fischerhude. Check dates and availability in advance for these as well.

Plan a stay that suits you

When looking for accommodation in Grasberg, you can start by choosing the focus of your stay: the farmstead’s history and the organ offer a different experience from a cycling tour or a visit during the Autumn Open Studios. The Dörfergarten and weekly market add further seasonal or date-dependent options to your plans. This lets you shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most, without having to squeeze every offering into a single itinerary.
