Vollersode: Trails, Moorland Views and Local History
Accommodation in Vollersode
Discover Vollersode through its distinctive landscapes and cultural landmarks: the Findorff Trail leads through the moraine landscape of Wallhöfen; there are also moorland views near Ansgari Church, as well as the Sodbrunnen well and historic farmsteads as local landmarks.
Circular Trails Through Wallhöfen’s Moraine Landscape
The Findorff Trail is a circular hiking route through the varied moraine landscape of Wallhöfen in the municipality of Vollersode. Two signposted options, 5 and 8 km long, make the route length an important practical difference when planning. The path is lined with old oak trees and hedgerows. Its naturally managed verges provide a habitat for cornflowers, skylarks and wild bees.
There are also various themes to discover along the way: information boards explain local geology, erratic boulders, history and nature. QR codes provide the accompanying texts in Low German, and numerous benches invite you to take a break. When planning a trip with children, you can compare the route lengths and consider whether they are especially interested in moorland views, animals along the way or the topics covered on the boards.
Moorland and Choosing a Route
Another circular route is Das Heilsmoor in Vollersode: it is approximately 11.2 km long, making it longer than both Findorff Trail options. Comparing the stated route lengths helps you factor the scope of the hike into your plans for the day. The nearby Springmoor nature reserve also contains a sandy heathland considered unique in the district of Osterholz.
Church and Traces of Everyday Life
In Wallhöfen, Ansgari Church stands on the edge of the geest and the edge of the Teufelsmoor. At Findorfschanze, it offers views across the moor towards Grasberg, Worpswede and Bremen. The church was consecrated in June 1966. The altar and the Resurrection Cross were created by Worpswede sculptor Ulrich Konrad.
Another local landmark is the Sodbrunnen well, with its attached bucket, which is well known in the Vollersode district. Historic farmsteads in Wallhöfen also preserve typical masonry enclosures. Together, these details show a different side of the area than the circular trails: architectural forms, local history and art provide additional cultural points of reference in the landscape.
Osterholz as a Wider Cultural Destination
The wider travel destination of Osterholz also offers distinct cultural attractions and reasons to visit. The Worpswede Art Museum permanently displays works by the first generation of Worpswede painters and their successors. From 1895 to 1923, the Barkenhoff was Heinrich Vogeler’s home and workplace. The Moorexpress also runs through the Teufelsmoor via Worpswede between Bremen and Stade on Saturdays and public holidays in summer. As operating days may change from year to year, check the timetable for your planned travel date.
