Bad Sachsa combines trails through the karst landscape of the Southern Harz with views from Ravensberg and a varied local history. Museums take you from the division of Germany through the history of winter sports to the geological eras of the region. There are also swimming and sauna facilities at Salztal Paradies. When planning your trip, you can choose from different interests rather than getting to know Bad Sachsa through just one attraction.

Karst Landscapes and Views from Ravensberg

The Karst Hiking Trail runs directly through Bad Sachsa, taking you through the karst landscape of the Southern Harz. For a different perspective, try the 4.5-kilometre Panorama Trail: it loops around Bad Sachsa and offers scenic views. This gives you two distinct options for outdoor plans: a route through the karst landscape and a circular trail around the town.

At 659 metres, Ravensberg is Bad Sachsa’s local mountain. From here, you can look out over the surrounding area and, on a clear day, even as far as the Brocken. You can reach the mountain on foot, by bicycle or mountain bike, or by car. These different ways of getting there, along with the views, make Ravensberg a distinct landscape attraction alongside the two trails.

Museums: From Contemporary History to Natural History

The Grenzlandmuseum Bad Sachsa focuses on the history of the division of Germany from 1945 to 1990, with particular emphasis on the Southern Harz. You can explore the permanent exhibition on your own or as part of a guided tour. The Wintersport- und Heimatmuseum offers a different focus: one of its main exhibits covers more than 100 years of winter sports history. It also traces Bad Sachsa’s development from a border town and stagecoach stop to an elegant spa town. Together, the museums offer different ways to explore the history of the town and its region.

The NatUrzeitmuseum turns its attention to the formation of today’s natural landscape. It provides insights into the geological eras that shaped the Southern Harz landscape around Bad Sachsa. If you are interested in the landscape, the museum offers a natural history perspective to complement what you see on the trails.

In the district of Steina, the Glasmuseum displays historic glass art from the 16th and 17th centuries and offers insights into the era of forest glassworks. Private guided tours can be arranged by prior appointment. Also in Steina is St. Catherine’s Church, which dates from the 18th century. The Steinatalsperre natural monument is a small historic dam in dense mixed forest. Steina therefore offers a range of different attractions: cultural history, an 18th-century building and a forest setting.

Swimming and Sauna Facilities at Salztal Paradies

The Salztal Paradies leisure pool complex includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, water channels with currents, a wave pool, a sports pool, an action area and a children’s water play area. The facilities also include a sauna complex, two giant whirlpools and a Roman steam bath. There are swimming areas to suit different interests as well as dedicated sauna facilities. As you plan, you can decide whether water activities, trails and views, or museums should be the focus of your days.
