Discover Osterode am Harz
Accommodation in Osterode Am Harz
Osterode am Harz combines half-timbered architecture and history with a landscape stretching between the Sösetalsperre reservoir, the southern Harz karst region and the Lerbach Valley. Cultural activities in the town range from guided tours to the museum in the Ritterhaus; there is also a themed cycling route and several long-distance hiking trails. You can tailor your visit to your interests by combining local history, a visit to the market and active days—and use this as a guide when looking for accommodation.
Half-timbered architecture, town history and museum
Guided walks explore the town’s development from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Their themes include half-timbered architecture, historic trade routes and the work of the town’s former residents. The museum in the Ritterhaus is housed in a 17th-century half-timbered building. Its exhibitions cover local crafts and industry, pharmacy, historic clothing and forestry, as well as Tilman Riemenschneider, Harz geology and regional prehistory. The programme also includes special exhibitions, museum festivals, markets, events, talks, concerts and educational activities. The ruins of the Welfenburg and St. Aegidien’s Church stand above Osterode. The town’s location on the German Half-Timbered House Road is another reflection of this architectural focus.
Cycling and hiking trails for different kinds of trips
The Harzer-Hexen-Stieg starts in Osterode and leads to Thale. The long-distance hiking trail is around 97 kilometres long and can be divided into five stages. Several other long-distance hiking trails also start in Osterode, including the Harzer BaudenSteig and the Harzer Försterstieg. For cycling, the T5 themed route starts at ALOHA-Aqualand and runs for around 32 kilometres through the southern Harz foothills and the karst landscape. The routes differ in length and type of trip: the T5 is a cycling loop, while the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg is a five-stage long-distance hiking trail.
In the southern Harz gypsum karst region, the Karstwanderweg offers varied routes and opportunities to observe nature. Near Osterode, the Lerbach Iron Ore Educational Trail leads to old mine tunnels and mining pits. The Water Climate Trail at the Sösetalsperre reservoir is another option for an excursion in the surrounding area. Alongside the long-distance trails, the focus also includes routes with themes ranging from observing nature to traces of mining.
Weekly market and Nature Experience Park
The Osterode weekly market takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays at Kornmarkt and Martin-Luther-Platz in the historic town centre. It offers fresh produce, including quality products that are partly grown or made locally. The Lerbach Nature Experience Park has a natural pond, a sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground, a waterfall, barbecue areas, a boules court and two little witch houses. For families, the playground is one specific point of interest; the other features mentioned also show the variety of what the park offers.
