Kirchboitzen combines the architectural history of St. Michaelis Church with the Boitzer Market, held annually in the village centre. There are also bus connections to Walsrode and several surrounding villages. This makes it possible to plan a visit around different interests: the history of the church’s construction, a market day in October, or destinations in the wider Walsrode travel area. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider whether your trip is focused mainly on Kirchboitzen’s local history and market, or also on the independent attractions in Walsrode.

St. Michaelis: Several Chapters of Building History

St. Michaelis Church was first documented in 1203. The present building dates from 1862 to 1864; a section of the tower made of fieldstone dates back to 1742. After a fire in 1945, the church interior was rebuilt. The dates refer to different stages in its history: the first documentation, construction of the present building, the older section of the tower, and the rebuilding of the interior.

From 1 April to 31 October, the church is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm. As these are seasonal opening hours, check them before your trip. The church also hosts theatre performances, art exhibitions and readings. This brings its architectural history together with cultural events; which of them are of interest for your visit also depends on the programme at the time.

The Boitzer Market and Planning Your Visit

The annual Boitzer Market is usually held on the first Wednesday in October in the centre of Kirchboitzen. Historically, the market was known as the SĂĽlzenmarkt. If you want to plan your visit around a particular market day, check the programme for the year you have in mind. This helps distinguish the recurring annual date from the specific events on the programme.

Bus routes connect Kirchboitzen with Walsrode and the nearby villages of Vethem, Südkampen, Nordkampen, Böhme, Rethem and Ludwigslust. Check the current timetables to see which connection suits your plans.

More Cultural and Nature Attractions in the Wider Walsrode Travel Area

In the wider Walsrode travel area, Walsrode Abbey offers public guided tours about the abbey’s history of more than 1,000 years and the present-day life of its Christian women’s community. From 1 April to 31 October, tours take place daily except Mondays at 3 pm. Check the current schedule before making firm plans to visit. The abbey is also on the Jacobusweg Lüneburger Heide pilgrimage route.

Weltvogelpark Walsrode covers 24 hectares and is home to 4,000 birds from 650 different species. A flight show there is described as Europe’s largest; it takes the audience on a journey around the world. Flight show times may vary. A 4-kilometre circular path leads through the park’s landscape.

The Rischmannshof Heath Museum in Walsrode explores the development of rural life in the Lüneburg Heath. The upper floor also houses a section on the town’s history and a Hermann Löns room. A granary with an external staircase, dating from 1669, was relocated to the museum. The bakehouse from Südkampen, built in 1752, is the centrepiece of the annual baking days. The museum thus brings together rural development, local history and specific historic buildings.

For a longer hike, the “Löns” circular hiking trail (RWW 8) runs for 16 kilometres from Walsrode via the Löns grave, Tietlingen and Meinerdingen, and back to Walsrode. The 4-kilometre circular path in Weltvogelpark and this 16-kilometre hiking trail differ considerably in length. The stated distances make it possible to weigh up a walk through the park landscape against a longer route.
