Heidekreis has many different sides: prehistoric megalithic tombs and historic buildings sit alongside theme parks, signposted routes and saltwater wellness. Are you mainly interested in cultural history, shared leisure activities or outdoor pursuits? Your answer can help guide your choice.

History through the ages

The exhibition at the German Tank Museum Munster includes more than 150 large-scale objects in five halls covering more than 10,000 square metres. As the exhibition may change, check what is currently on display before your visit. In Bad Fallingbostel, the Hof der Heidmark was built in 1642, dismantled in 1936 and rebuilt in Liethwald. The listed building is one of the oldest in Heidekreis district.

Walsrode Monastery is the oldest of the famous heathland monasteries. Ahlden Castle was built on the Old Leine in 1579 and is associated with the banishment of Electoral Princess Sophia Dorothea. Near Ostenholz, the Seven Stone Houses are prehistoric megalithic tombs. This spans a historical arc from prehistoric burial sites to the architecture and castle history of the early modern period.

Experiences for different interests

Peppa Pig Land at Heide Park in Soltau offers gentle rides and family entertainment for younger children. Heide Park’s Big 7 include the roller coasters Colossos, Krake and Scream. These different focuses can help when planning a trip with children: attractions for younger children and roller coasters appeal to different interests.

Buhl Activity Park Walsrode offers high ropes courses and an 18-hole footgolf course. The availability of individual activities may change, so check the current offerings before your visit. Serengeti Park offers a different kind of outing: its 10-kilometre safari drive takes you through the Serengeti Safari in your own car. Soltau-Therme offers saltwater wellness, adding another option to the mix.

Nature and getting around

At 169 metres, Wilseder Berg is the highest point in the North German Plain. The surrounding area is almost car-free: cars can only use access roads to car parks in the places around the nature reserve. Otherwise, people get around on foot or by bicycle. Take this into account when planning your visit, and check parking options before you travel.

Heidekreis also has kilometres of signposted routes for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding, leading to worthwhile destinations. Individual routes may change. The range of activities offers different ways to experience the landscape; when choosing, consider how you would like to get around.
