Visbek: Megalithic Tombs, Circular Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Visbek
Visbek combines impressive megalithic tombs with circular trails through the countryside and a local history that can be traced through historic buildings and archaeological finds. Tours in the municipality focus on a range of themes: heading out into the floodplain landscape, visiting the megalithic tombs or exploring the history of the town. This lets you tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
Megalithic Tombs near Engelmannsbäke
The Visbeker Bräutigam and the Heidenopfertisch are located near Engelmannsbäke in the municipality of Visbek. Both are considered the largest megalithic tombs in northern Germany. The Visbeker Bräutigam is a good 100 metres long and is also the largest megalithic burial chamber in Lower Saxony. Its scale makes it a striking destination for anyone interested in Stone Age structures and early history.
Local history is also present in specific places. The present-day neo-Gothic St. Vitus Church stands in the centre of Visbek. Built between 1872 and 1876, it is the seventh church on this site. On the north side of the parish church, the Abbot Gerbert Castus monument offers another reminder of the centre’s history: the bronze sculpture at Klosterplatz dates from 1984.
Circular Trails of Different Lengths
The “Auenlandschaft” circular route is 5.1 kilometres long and runs through the northern part of the municipality of Visbek. It leads from the Bullmühle car park through the “Bäken zwischen Endeler und Holzhauser Heide” nature reserve. The route therefore combines a manageable distance with a walk through the named protected area.
For a longer loop, there is the designated 15.4-kilometre “Rund um die Endeler Heide” route. It is one of the longest circular routes in the district of Vechta. At 7.8 kilometres, the “Kleine Visbeker Tour” falls between the two; you can start at the town hall or at the Heimathaus, Rechterfelder Straße 1. The three distances offer a clear guide for planning, without implying a particular walking time.
Visbek tour guides offer a variety of tours around the municipality. By arrangement, a custom tour can be put together for groups, in Low German if desired. Another way to get to know the municipality is to take a tour with a virtual guide.
Archaeology and Special Guided Tours
ArchäoVisbek offers insights into the archaeology and history of Visbek. On display are historical evidence and finds from major excavations carried out in recent years. The archaeological and historical information centre was inaugurated in May 2018; its themes complement a visit to the megalithic tombs with finds and historical context.
During the darker months, the evening torchlight tour “Der Hauch des Hünengeistes” introduces visitors to the history of the Heidenopfertisch and the Visbeker Bräutigam. It offers a different focus from exploring on your own: the two megalithic tombs and their history take centre stage, accompanied by an evening torchlight walk.
