Holdorf: Water, Trails and History
Accommodation in Holdorf
Holdorf has many different facets: the town has an indoor swimming pool, the Bürgerpark preserves a historic farmstead complex, and the Mühlenbach Nature Trail leads from Holdorf toward Damme. Churches, farmsteads, and other traces of the town’s history add to the picture. When planning your trip, you can prioritize nature, activity, or culture according to your interests, rather than limiting your stay to a single way of exploring.
Water and nature trails
Heidesee offers clear water, white sandy beaches, and densely wooded sections of shoreline. It is a place to relax for families, swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers. Lifeguard services, refreshment stands, and restroom facilities are seasonal—a key distinction when planning a day of swimming. Holdorf also has an indoor swimming pool, so different ways of swimming are available to suit different interests.
The Heidesee Route starts at Heidesee and follows a nature trail through fields and small patches of woodland. It runs along the Kardinalsweg and passes a forest chapel. Trail conditions and access may change.
The Mühlenbach Nature Trail, also known as the Silver Ribbon, offers a different focus. It leads from Holdorf toward Damme along the route of a former ore railway. Along the way, five interactive stations and observation platforms add to the experience. At the Holdorf waterworks, the Baum & Natur circular trail has a different focus: it explores the connection between forests and water quality. It includes an avenue of fruit trees and an avenue of Trees of the Year. The nature trails therefore highlight different themes: the former railway route and its stations on the one hand, and forests, water, and trees on the other.
Bürgerpark and places to meet
At Holdorf’s Bürgerpark, a historic farmstead that was relocated, the Bürgerhaus, and the remise have become the new home of the Holdorf local history society. The farmstead and amphitheater host music, dance, and theater on an ongoing basis; individual programs may vary. The park brings historic buildings together with a diverse cultural program.
An inclusive playground is located right next to the Bürgerpark farmstead. The farmstead can be reached via two accessible paths and has approximately 60 bicycle parking spaces. Facilities and access may change. These practical details can help you plan a visit by bicycle or a stop at the Bürgerpark.
Churches, farmsteads, and historic traces
The parish church of St. Peter and Paul stands in the center of Holdorf. This Neo-Gothic church was consecrated in 1858. One notable detail is the altar cross: its corpus dates from the 16th century and comes from the workshop of an Osnabrück artist. Its architecture and furnishings thus lead from the building history of the 19th century to a much older work of art.
The Dersaburg is a wooded hillfort on a 107-meter-high hill between Damme and Holdorf. Historically, it was used to monitor plank paths through the moor. At Gut Ihorst, a listed building dating from 1680 and a Baroque chapel from 1737 stand side by side. The chapel is surrounded by a moat; the estate lies in the forest on the road from Holdorf to Steinfeld. It has been owned by the von Spee family since 1882, and the chapel underwent extensive restoration in 1975.
Smaller details also tell of different periods: the Old Holdorf Railway Station dates from 1899 and has information panels about its history. The Hof zu Amtern is documented as early as 1240; its half-timbered construction is considered elaborate. Together with the church, the Dersaburg, and Gut Ihorst, these places offer different ways to explore the region’s architecture and past—from half-timbered buildings and a hillfort to a Neo-Gothic church.
