Neukalen between the Peene, harbour and railway history
Accommodation in Neukalen
Neukalen invites you to explore waterways, a distinctive town layout and railway history all in one trip. The harbour on the Peene Canal, cycling routes around Lake Kummerow and walking paths through winding lanes offer a range of ways to experience the area. You can choose where to stay based on whether you’d prefer to discover something new on the water, by bike or on foot.
Harbour, Peene Canal and waterways
Neukalen’s harbour lies on the Peene Canal, which flows into Lake Kummerow, and is just a few minutes’ walk from the market square. Redesigned in 1993, it is a meeting place and mooring for water sports enthusiasts. From the harbour, you can explore the surrounding area and waterways by canoe. In the Peene Valley River Landscape Nature Park, watercraft are permitted on the Peene Canal near Neukalen.
Motorboats are another way to enjoy the water: Yachtcharter Schulz’s base in Neukalen offers modern boats for exploring the Peene and travelling towards the Baltic coast. If you’re planning this option, check current availability.
Cycling routes around Lake Kummerow
On a cycling trip around Lake Kummerow, it’s worth taking a detour in Neukalen to the modern harbour and historic town centre, with its ring-shaped street layout. Another cycling route runs from Neukalen to the place known as Aalbude, along the edge of the Große Rosin restoration area.
The flooded area provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. White-tailed eagles and migratory birds can be spotted there, and a viewing platform on the edge of the forest overlooks the landscape. The route combines the ride to Aalbude with views of the restoration area and opportunities to observe nature.
Town walks and local history
You can also explore Neukalen on foot: its winding lanes invite you to take a walk through town. One route leads from the market square along LutherstraĂźe and the promenade, past the former railway station and into Gartsbruch. The route to Salem is well signposted and ends at Ratmannsteich in Neukalen. The oldest intact fire station in Mecklenburg is located there.
Railway museum and traditions
The Neukalen Railway Museum features an exhibition on the development of railway workers’ uniforms over several centuries. The exhibits include various shoulder boards dating from 1872 to 1918. Five historic railway wagons can be seen at the neighbouring goods station; one houses a café.
Carnival is also part of local cultural life and has been celebrated on a large scale in Neukalen since 1958. The Neukalen Marksmen’s Guild, founded in 1689, holds its annual marksmen’s festival in Gartsbruch at the end of June, together with the club and town festival. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the latest dates and programmes.
Neukalen as a starting point for planning your trip
Neukalen lies amid the biodiverse Peene Valley River Landscape and Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow nature parks, making it a starting point for excursions to explore local flora and fauna.
