In Boddin, St. Nikolai Village Church, the local history room and the manor house represent different facets of the village’s history. Fields, meadows, forests and small ponds also characterize the surrounding area. You can tailor your trip to whether you are particularly interested in architectural history and local chronicles or are seeking peace and quiet in a rural landscape.

Architectural history at St. Nikolai Village Church

The rectangular fieldstone choir of St. Nikolai Village Church was consecrated in 1288. A slightly wider, single-nave hall made of red brick was added in the 14th century. The different materials and proportions clearly illustrate the construction phases: fieldstone in the choir and red brick in the nave.

A medieval detail has also been preserved inside: the choir’s ribbed vault panels feature painted decoration. The yellow-brick west tower was added to the west side in 1913/14. Anyone interested in historic architectural forms will find several concrete details at the church from different periods of its construction history.

Culture in the wider destination of Walkendorf

In the wider destination of Walkendorf, the Richard Wossidlo House is dedicated to the folklorist Richard Wossidlo. The museum is housed in a rural farmworker’s cottage built around 1875. Wossidlo was born in Friedrichshof, a locality in the municipality of Walkendorf, and baptized in the church there.

Also in Walkendorf is the Alte Ausspanne, a heritage-listed half-timbered house with a thatched roof that has been lovingly restored. It has a 4,600-square-meter meadow garden with benches, lounging areas, a herb spiral and a pond. In summer, the Alte Ausspanne café is shaded by an old lime tree behind the building.

The Alte Ausspanne also has the expandable “Sommergalerie” event room, which hosts special exhibitions on art and culture. Visitors can also take part in creative courses there. If you are interested in a course, check the dates in advance. Walkendorf thus adds Wossidlo’s life story, exhibitions and creative activities to the cultural picture.
