Klein Upahl lies right by Lake Upahl in a scenic, rolling landscape. The lake is designated as a nature reserve, and the village was first mentioned in official records in 1263. The water, varied terrain and local history give a trip here a clear focus: experience nature and explore the surroundings on foot or on the water.

Lake, Rolling Hills and Birdlife

Lake Upahl near Klein Upahl is used as a roosting site by an estimated 500 to 1,500 geese. Northern species are also present during the winter half of the year. The birdlife adds a seasonal aspect to a stay: in winter, other species join the geese as part of the lakeside scene.

The landscape can also be experienced from different viewpoints. Jasenberg lies south of Klein Upahl and is 94 metres high. Its slopes offer impressive views of Lake Upahl and Lake Lenzen, as well as adjoining woodland within the protected area. An observation platform on Jasenberg offers a sweeping view across Lake Groß Upahl.

Trails around Jasenberg and Beyond

A field path leads from Klein Upahl to the observation tower on Jasenberg. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions before your visit. A longer hike from Klein Upahl to Lohmen is 11 kilometres long. It starts at the Klein Upahl Agricultural Machinery Museum and first leads to Jasenberg. The route then heads towards Lake Hohen, offering a view of the lake, which lies in a deep hollow.

Another hike starts in Boitin and follows woodland, field and meadow paths directly to the centre of Klein Upahl. It is 19 kilometres long. From the trail, you can see part of the Upahl and Lenzen Lakes Nature Reserve, which is largely inaccessible. Comparing the lengths helps put the two hikes in perspective: the shorter route starts in Klein Upahl and leads to Lohmen, while the longer one comes from Boitin and ends in Klein Upahl. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out on either hike.

By Kayak and at the Summer Festival

Scout Kayak Rental is based in Klein Upahl, where it also has its meeting point. Its services include kayaks, transport to launch sites, pick-up and tour tips. If you would like to include this service in your plans, check availability before you travel.

The summer festival also offers a specific glimpse of the events programme: wellington-boot throwing was part of it in 2024 and 2025. If you are planning a trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

To help choose where to stay, consider the starting points: Scout Kayak Rental meets in Klein Upahl, and the 11-kilometre hike to Lohmen also starts there. By contrast, the 19-kilometre hike starts in Boitin and ends in the village centre. Think about which activities you plan to do and where you would like to start.

More Things to Experience in the Rostock Destination

The wider Rostock destination also offers distinctive nature and cultural attractions. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park independently or join guided wolf, owl and evening walks. Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers; its 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zip line runs directly over the lake.

Sternberg Lake District Nature Park offers a different focus: its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests are ideal for hiking and cycling. In Linstow, the Wolhynian Resettlers Museum offers tours for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photographs and documents, the tours tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War.
