Discover Dömitz: Fortress, Elbe and Waterways
Accommodation in Dömitz
Dömitz brings together the Elbe and a distinctive history of fortifications and town life. The town is located at Elbe kilometre 504 and is nestled within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe. Here, river landscapes meet cultural themes: waterways and floodplains sit alongside a Renaissance fortress, a museum and historic buildings. If you are planning a trip around different interests, you can explore these themes as separate highlights.
Fortress and town history
Dömitz Fortress is a pentagonal Renaissance fortress on the Mecklenburg bank of the Elbe. From its “Drache” bastion, you can see across the Elbe to the Dömitz Elbe Bridge and the Dömitz Railway Bridge, an industrial monument. The fortress museum covers the history of the fortress and town, as well as the Elbe and the history of the harbour and bridges. Fritz Reuter and special and art exhibitions are also among the topics on display. The former arsenal also houses the exhibition “Man and the Biosphere – Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” in the information centre for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V.
The stone lock tells another chapter in the history of construction. Built between 1568 and 1572, it retained its original form despite later alterations, including its original brick lock chamber, sections of the mitre gates, and coats of arms and inscription plaques. It is considered the oldest brick lock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Together with the fortress complex, harbour and old department store, it is one of Dömitz’s notable sights. Cultural and historical interest here ranges from the large-scale fortifications to a technical structure.
The Elbe and its waterways
At kilometre 0.00 in Dömitz begins the navigable Müritz-Elde Waterway, which connects the Elbe with the Mecklenburg Lake District. This largely unspoilt waterway has a gentle current, making it suitable for paddlers and less experienced raft and houseboat users, too. From Dömitz harbour, you can take lock-free trips on the Elbe. The Dömitz Waterway Activity Centre includes a marina, Huckleberry’s raft station, canoe hire, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboard hire.
There are several ways to enjoy the water: a lock-free trip on the Elbe, or paddling, raft trips and houseboating on the Müritz-Elde Waterway. Which option shapes your stay depends on the perspective you are looking for on the river and its waterways.
Routes and nature experiences
The Elbe Cycle Route, the Mecklenburg Lake District Cycle Route and the international Iron Curtain Trail pass through Dömitz or lead through the town. The Elbetal Star Tour runs from Dömitz via the Klein Schmölen inland dune and the Klein Schmölen Brack back to Dömitz. There are several route options: three named trails through the town and one tour that starts and ends in Dömitz, taking in two other places along the way.
Nearby, a completed skywalk, part of the “Nature and Cultural Experience at the Dömitz Railway Bridge” project, offers a new perspective on the variety of habitats in the floodplain landscape. Guided ranger tours are also offered in the area around Dömitz. If you would like to include one in your plans, check the latest dates in advance.
Plan your stay and journey
Dömitz has had no rail connection since the Dömitz–Ludwigslust railway line was closed in 2001. The named cycle routes and the Elbetal Star Tour may also influence your travel plans. You can tailor your search to the experiences you would like to make the focus of your visit to Dömitz.
