Discover Lübtheen: heathland, lake and history
Accommodation in Lübtheen
Lübtheen combines open heathland and cultural history with a lakeside destination. In the Lübtheen Heath, nature and hiking take center stage; at the Probst Jesar Forest Swimming Bath, you can also enjoy the lakeshore and boat rentals. The Old Sexton’s House Museum adds the history of mining and vehicle manufacturing in Lübtheen to the mix. This lets you plan your trip around your specific interests.
Heathland and the Heath Trail
The Lübtheen Heath covers 1,400 hectares of open inland dunes and extensive heathland. Since 2015, it has been part of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Biosphere Reserve. Its scale and distinctive landscape give nature experiences in Lübtheen a clear focus: rather than a single viewpoint, the area is characterized by expansive open spaces.
One specific way to explore the landscape is the Heath Trail. This approximately 8-kilometer circular route starts at the parking lot at Probst Jesar Forest Swimming Bath. Open heathland, silver grass communities and pine trees define its character. There is also a covered seating area and an information board along the trail, both useful for taking a break and finding your bearings. Its approximate length gives you a clear idea of what to expect when planning a hike.
Late summer is especially recommended, when heather is in full bloom. The flowering period can vary from year to year. If seeing the heath in bloom is important to you, keep this seasonal variation in mind when planning your trip.
Lakeshore, boat rentals and trail planning
Probst Jesar Forest Swimming Bath is on the eastern shore of a lake in Probst Jesar, a district of Lübtheen, east of Lübtheen and south of Hagenow. Rowboats and pedal boats are available for rent there. Boat rentals offer a different focus from hiking across the heath: when planning your trip, you can choose between a circular walk through open countryside and time spent by the water. Boat rental operating details may vary seasonally; check them in advance if you plan to rent a boat.
In the Lübtheen National Natural Heritage area, the former Lübtheen military training ground, some paths have been open to walkers and cyclists since April 1, 2021. Designated paths and safety rules must be followed. Access is prohibited away from the approved hiking and cycling routes. Because of its former use as a military training ground, the area is contaminated with ammunition and unexploded ordnance. Check the current route and safety rules before setting out.
Cultural history at the Old Sexton’s House
Since June 29, 2003, the Old Sexton’s House Museum has been housed in the former sexton’s house on Schulstraße in Lübtheen. Its exhibitions cover the history of mining and the history of vehicle manufacturing in Lübtheen. The museum thus complements the nature-focused attractions with two aspects of local history. If you want to include both landscape and culture in your trip, it offers a destination in its own right alongside the Heath Trail and the swimming bath.
These different highlights give your trip planning a clear direction: an approximately eight-kilometer loop through the heath, a visit to the lakeshore with rowboat or pedal boat rentals, or exhibitions on Lübtheen’s history. Think about which experience matters most to you and use it as a starting point when looking for accommodation in Lübtheen.
