Wangern: rural scenery and nature

In nearby Hinter Wangern, holiday apartments and farms are part of the rural landscape. Numerous ponds are also part of the surroundings; they are remnants of the last Ice Age, and fishing is possible at some of them. Alongside the rural scenery, geological traces and fishing opportunities are therefore also in focus.

Nearby Hinter Wangern has a natural beach in a quiet bay; Hinter Wangern borders the Fauler See Nature Reserve. There is also a secluded nudist beach beside Poel’s coastal cliff. Outside the main season, the beach and cliff can also be explored on horseback. The quiet bay and the coastal cliff thus offer two distinct beach experiences in the surrounding area.

On Poel Island: nature and culture

The island church on Poel Island was built of brick in the Romanesque-Gothic style in the first half of the 13th century. Its 47-metre-high tower is a landmark visible from far across the island. In addition to church services, there are guided tours and visits, as well as numerous concerts; check event dates if you plan to attend a concert.

The Poel Erratic Boulder Garden offers a geological perspective. It displays rocks found exclusively on the coasts or in the fields of Poel Island, and provides insights into around two billion years of Earth’s history. Poel Island’s natural environment also includes the Langenwerder bird sanctuary: it provides suitable living conditions for wading and water birds, and migrating birds use it as a resting place.
