Wedendorfer See is a destination shaped by the lake and the surrounding landscape. Wedendorfer See covers around 24 hectares and has a natural shoreline with an almost continuous belt of reeds. It is part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle including Wedendorfer See” landscape conservation area. Water, reeds and protected countryside create a distinctive natural setting; hiking trails and historic buildings offer further discoveries.

Lake and trails on foot

A hiking trail financed with LEADER funding makes it possible to walk around Wedendorfer See. The landscape conservation area is also well served by hiking and walking trails. The circular route around the lake and the other trails in the protected area offer different experiences: you can make the lake the focus of your tour or concentrate on a walk through the wider landscape. Check local conditions before setting out.

Cycling through historic farmland

You can also explore the landscape by bike: the route follows quiet, out-of-the-way roads through historic farmland and the present-day Köchelsdorfer Mühle landscape conservation area, reaching Wedendorfer See. Unlike the hiking trail, which allows you to circle the lake, the cycling route approaches the water from the surrounding cultural landscape.

The Tiene, its valley and old trees

The Tiene rises on the west shore of Wedendorfer See as its outflow. North of the state road, it meanders gently through a narrow erosion valley with a pronounced steep slope. Alder and ash gallery forests line its course to the impounded millpond of the former Köchelstorfer Mühle. The landscape thus extends from the lake’s reed-lined shore to a distinctly incised valley.

Along the hiking trail to Wedendorf Castle, the belt of deciduous woodland features attractive old trees, especially beeches and oaks. Wedendorf Castle was built as a Baroque palace in 1697 and remodeled in the Classical style in the early 19th century. Its architectural history therefore includes two clearly defined phases: its construction as a Baroque palace and its later Classical redesign.

Organ and crypt in Kirch Grambow

The village church in Kirch Grambow also offers specific insights into local history. Friedrich Friese (Friese III) built its organ in 1864. Beneath the church is a crypt containing the coffins of the von BĂĽlow and von Plessen patronage families. The organ and crypt offer insight into different aspects of local history, from the construction of an instrument to the commemoration of the patronage families.

Northwest Mecklenburg in the wider region

The wider geographical setting is Northwest Mecklenburg. In the north of the district lies the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape region; in the south is the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraines, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coasts, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape. Wedendorfer See can thus be placed within a district defined by a variety of landscape forms.
