Zierow on the Bay of Wismar
Accommodation in Zierow
Zierow is located directly on the Bay of Wismar. At Eggers Wiek, the village has a stretch of Baltic coastline about two kilometres long. The coast, trails for hikers and cyclists, and the village’s history give a stay here a range of different focuses.
Natural beach at Eggers Wiek
Zierow’s natural beach has a gently sloping swimming access and a large beach playground. For families, these are two practical considerations when planning the day: you can make the beach your swimming destination and include the playground too. The coastline stretches for about two kilometres, making the setting on the Bay of Wismar tangible right at the beach.
You can also combine time at the beach with the other activities Zierow has to offer: the European long-distance footpath E9 runs through the village, and cyclists can reach destinations at two different distances via the Baltic Sea Cycle Route.
Hiking the European long-distance footpath E9
The E9 passes through Zierow and, on the routes described, offers two directions: from Zierow, head via Hohen Wieschendorf to Boltenhagen, or follow Eggers Wiek via Hoben to Wismar. These named places help distinguish the routes by their destinations. If you would rather make a particular route the focus than spend the day at the beach, you can take this sequence of stops into account when planning your trip.
Cycling destinations at different distances
Via the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, cyclists can reach Wismar from Zierow in about 7 km and the seaside resort of Boltenhagen in 18 km. Wismar is therefore the shorter of the two cycling routes mentioned; the distances offer a practical guide when choosing a destination. In summer, the “Charge4Bike” charging station stands beside the DLRG lifeguard tower on Zierow beach. Up to four e-bikes and pedelecs can be charged there at the same time.
Village centre and local history
The manor house forms the centre of Zierow. The tourist information office and Zierow community centre are also located in the village centre. There you can find information about the village, its surroundings and the Northwest Mecklenburg region. All rooms and facilities at the tourist information office and community centre that are available to visitors can be accessed without steps.
The small village museum provides information about the history of the municipality of Zierow. Information about the exhibits is provided in writing. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check locally what visiting options are available. Together with the tourist information office, the museum offers a different way to experience your stay than the beach and trails: here, the focus is on the village’s history.
Northwest Mecklenburg in a wider context
The wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses a variety of landscapes. To the north lies the Northwest Mecklenburg Upland, with the Bay of Wismar; to the south is the West Mecklenburg Lake District, with Lake Schwerin. The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraines, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. These regional descriptions provide a broader context for planning a trip, but should not be equated with specific landscape features of Zierow.
Cultural sites are also part of this broader regional picture: Gadebusch is home to a Renaissance castle dating from 1573. It is considered a rare example of Mecklenburgian or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style. Another distinct landscape is the approximately 600-hectare “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area between the southern outskirts of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It encompasses the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, wooded areas and swamp forests.
