Buggenhagen brings together a Neoclassical manor house, contemporary art, a park with a lake, and the Klotzow Nature Trail. Hiking and cycling descriptions also lead to the manor house. This brings together a range of travel interests: castle history and the collection, nature topics, or time spent on described routes.

Buggenhagen Castle: Manor House and Museum

Buggenhagen Castle was built around 1840 as a Neoclassical manor house, inspired by the buildings on Pariser Platz in Berlin. It was once the ancestral seat of the von Buggenhagen family. After a longer period of disuse, the castle became home to the Till Richter Museum of Contemporary Art. The history of the house and the museum’s present-day focus offer two distinct cultural perspectives for a stay.

The collection comprises several hundred works in all media by more than 100 artists from Europe, America, and Asia. Its scope therefore extends beyond individual media and a single region of origin. A distinctive opportunity to work and exhibit is offered by the annual “Rising Stars Residency”: the museum invites one to three artists for three months, from mid-May to mid-August, to work individually or collaboratively. The resulting works are exhibited in the museum’s main rooms from August to January.

Park, Nature Trail, and Routes

Buggenhagen Castle is set in a seven-hectare park with a lake. By February 2025, local residents and tourists had already been able to use the Klotzow Nature Trail since September 2024. Seven information boards explain the water source, the rewetting of the peatland, and native trees and birds. The trail is accessible to all age groups. Water, peatland, and native species give the route several clearly defined nature topics.

The “Lassaner Winkel” hiking route leads from Lassan through Buggenhagen to the Großer Moor. The hike takes you to Buggenhagen Castle; a footpath runs past the castle on the right, through the castle park, and into nearby Jamitzow. Route details may change if the route is revised. Check the current route before setting out.

The manor house is also a landmark for cyclists: the cycling brochure published in 2013 lists it, among other places, as a destination on Route 4, “Lassaner Winkel.” As the cycle network may change, check the current route before setting off.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Buggenhagen can be reached via federal highway 111, state road 26, and then district road 30. From Buggenhagen, the island of Usedom and the district town of Anklam can be reached via Pinnow. The municipality lies on the Peenestrom.

When choosing accommodation in Buggenhagen, you can start with your travel priorities: should the focus be on the castle’s history and collection, or would you like to include the nature trail and described routes? The residency makes cultural planning depend on its working and exhibition periods; for hiking and cycling, the current route is a specific point to consider when planning.
