Medow brings together a canal flowing through the district and a village church whose history of construction spans several centuries. The Peenetal Circular Route also passes through the village. This gives you a range of interests to consider when planning your trip: cycling, landscapes and historic architecture.

The canal and cycling route as local landmarks

The Peenetal Circular Route is 140 kilometres long in total and divided into three stages. In Medow, it passes the former horse stable with its estate blacksmith’s workshop. The Peene-Süd Canal flows through the district and is easy to spot from the cycle path. The distance and number of stages refer to the circular route, not to a route entirely within Medow. If you are planning a cycling tour, check the current route and signage beforehand. Medow is on the B 199 federal highway. As a nearby point of reference, the Hanseatic city of Anklam is about 10 kilometres east of Medow.

The village church and its history of construction

Medow village church is a plastered brick building with a core dating from the 15th century. It was extended to the south in 1695. Around 1900, the church was given a neo-Gothic redesign, as well as an added tower with a curved dome and lantern. A major renovation in 1900 gave it its present appearance; it was reconsecrated on 12 February 1901. The sequence makes it possible to trace several phases of construction in a single building.

The furnishings also bring together different styles and histories of origin: the church contains a Baroque pulpit altar with Solomonic columns dating from around 1700, and a Romantic organ by P. B. Völkner. The stained-glass windows and bells came from the monastery church in Stolpe. The furnishings and architecture thus complement each other, while the church’s history is not limited to a single period of construction.

Medow was first mentioned in a document in 1310. The Slavic place name means something like “honey village.” In 1720, under the Stockholm peace agreement, the village became part of the Kingdom of Prussia and was made a “royal village” under King Frederick William I. The village’s ecclesiastical development is also part of its history: the parish seat was moved to Medow, where the local chapel had to be enlarged.

Vorpommern-Greifswald on a broader scale

Beyond Medow, the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers a regional perspective on nature and culture. The district’s three nature parks together cover almost 40 percent of its area. In Anklam, about 10 kilometres east of Medow, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal. It is a technical museum devoted to a person, in his hometown. These regional themes sit alongside the local focus on the canal, circular route and village history, offering other points of interest for planning your trip.

When looking for accommodation in Medow, you can first consider which themes will shape your trip: the cycling route and Peene-Süd Canal, the history of the village church, or other destinations in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald region.
