Cambs lies on the northeastern shore of the elongated Lake Cambs. The small chapel and the manor house with its park represent different chapters in the village’s history. The park also borders Lake Cambs; in Cambs, the lakeside setting and historic buildings are therefore two defining themes. The municipality also includes the Warnow river breakthrough valley near Karnin, adding a distinct landscape and hiking dimension. When planning your trip, it is worth considering whether you are mainly interested in the lakeshore and architectural history, or more in the hiking landscape.

Chapel and manor house: architectural history in Cambs

The small chapel in Cambs is a cultural and historical monument of interest. Its origins date back to 1680; the present building was constructed using half-timbering in 1855/56. The chapel underwent extensive restoration between 1977 and 1981. Its origins, present-day construction and restoration thus fall in distinctly different periods.

Cambs Manor House was built around 1800. During renovation work in 1906, it took on its present appearance, with a conservatory on the south side; a Neoclassical extension was added to the west side in the 1930s. The manor house and park form part of the historic core of Cambs’ village development. The manor house is protected as a historic monument under the relevant heritage legislation. The park, with its mature trees, borders the lake of the same name, Lake Cambs, linking the history of the manor house with its lakeside setting.

Hiking in the municipality

In Karnin, a district of the municipality, the Warnow river breakthrough valley takes center stage. It offers hikers a varied landscape. Two location references can help you find your way: the valley can be reached from Langen BrĂĽtz in the direction of Kleefeld; when hiking in Karnin, the trail leads from the forest entrance to the Warnow. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

The Karnin Nature Conservation Station has been an information and training center since 1991. A break at the station is possible by prior arrangement by telephone at (038423) 54900. The municipality thus offers both a nature experience and a specific point of contact in Karnin, while the chapel, manor house and park shape Cambs’ local history.

Another cultural highlight in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel destination

Ludwigslust Palace adds a different cultural and historical dimension to the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel destination. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Versailles of the North.” The palace is the centerpiece of an almost entirely preserved late Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. Inside, the palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The architectural history of Cambs and the courtly culture of the Ludwigslust ensemble therefore offer distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.

When looking for accommodation, you can start by choosing your focus: Cambs offers a lakeside setting and local architectural history, while the district of Karnin is a base for hiking in the Warnow river breakthrough valley. Shape your search around the aspect of the trip you want to define your stay.
