Sukow: Village Church, Porcelain and Lewitz
Accommodation in Sukow
The municipality of Sukow combines historic village culture and porcelain craftsmanship with equestrian sports and its location on the edge of the Lewitz landscape and nature conservation area. The village’s history is particularly vivid in its church; the workshop and courses offer an insight into porcelain making. There are also various ways to spend time outdoors as you plan your trip.
A Village Church with a Rich History
The present-day Neo-Gothic village church was designed by Schwerin architect Theodor KrĂĽger. After three years of construction, it was consecrated in 1883 and is already the third place of worship on this site. During construction work on the church, a three-part altarpiece from a former chapel was rediscovered. It depicts the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Burial of Jesus. The reverse notes that David Hille, court painter from Schwerin, painted it in 1700.
The bells and organ also tell stories of different eras. Today, three bells hang in the church tower. Two bronze bells, newly cast after the Second World War, were consecrated in a festive service in 1969; the smallest bell dates from 1614. Its eventful history is the subject of a poem by Heinrich Jaeger, written for the bell consecration in 1930. The church received an organ in 1908.
Porcelain Craftsmanship and Equestrian Culture
At her workshop in Sukow, porcelain painter and designer Kerstin Behrens welcomes visitors to watch her at work. Those who would like to create something themselves can make small porcelain artworks in courses at the porcelain manufactory, discover their artistic skills and learn about practical work in a manufactory. The First Mecklenburg Porcelain Manufactory also makes unique hand-painted pieces to order.
Equestrian sports are another side of Sukow: the village has developed into a stronghold of this sport over many years. Horse lovers can swap their bicycle saddle for a riding saddle for a few hours, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Lewitz area. These are different ways to experience the region—actively in the saddle or on a carriage ride.
Lewitz and Insights into Rural Life
Near the church, Uhlenpark invites visitors to relax amid its well-kept lawns, park benches and wooden pavilion. Sukow’s location on the edge of the Lewitz landscape and nature conservation area also gives the village a close connection to its natural surroundings.
In Zietlitz, a district of the municipality of Sukow, the Norddeutscher Kinderbauernhof offers visitors a glimpse of rural life. It was founded in 2007 as a project for the Lewitz satellite site of the 2009 Federal Horticultural Show in Schwerin. Various events are held in a large, rustic round barn; check specific dates before your trip.
Bodderwech is an old path in the district of Zietlitz. It leads from Zietlitz Forest to Raben Steinfeld Forest, in the direction of Schwerin. From Zietlitz, cycle paths allow rides towards Pinnow and Schwerin, as well as into the Lewitz landscape conservation area.
