Dierkow-Neu is characterised by green spaces, paths and distinctive neighbourhood landmarks. At Kurt-Schumacher-Ring, there is a central green space with adapted paths, a renovated neighbourhood logo and a sculpture. At GutenbergstraĂźe, a walking path runs parallel to the railway tracks. There are also play and sports areas, as well as residential buildings constructed in the 1980s. When choosing accommodation, these different points of reference can help you assess the surroundings according to your own interests.

Green Spaces and Neighbourhood Art

In the central green space at Kurt-Schumacher-Ring, paths have been adapted to meet current needs, particularly with regard to accessibility. The naturalistic Dierkow neighbourhood logo, “Labyrinth”, which has been carefully renovated, is also located there. Another striking work is the sculpture “Der Kopf” (“The Head”), subtitled “Tag und Nacht” (“Day and Night”), by sculptor Wolfgang Friedrich. The paths, neighbourhood logo and sculpture give this green space a range of distinctive features, combining practical use with visible expressions of neighbourhood design.

A walking path runs parallel to the railway tracks across the eastern large meadow in the green spaces on GutenbergstraĂźe. There is also a public barbecue area there, available to local residents.

Paths and Places to Get Active

Another section of path runs along Dierkower Allee, between Rövershäger Chaussee and the junction with Kurt-Schumacher-Ring. The footpath and cycle path was renovated and made accessible over a stretch of around 500 metres between October 2019 and April 2020.

Sports and leisure facilities are also part of the neighbourhood. Alongside the sports hall at Kurt-Schumacher-Ring 161a, several leisure areas are set in green surroundings, including a skate park and playgrounds. The sports complex on Walter-Butzek-Straße also includes a full-size football pitch suitable for competitive matches. The Dierkow Neighbourhood and Community Centre at Kurt-Schumacher-Ring 160 offers “JuKi”, a children’s and youth club for young people aged 6 to 26.

Architecture and Everyday Landmarks

Dierkow-Neu was built between 1983 and 1987 using large-panel construction. The rows of three- to six-storey buildings form many small courtyards. This gives the neighbourhood a different character from its green spaces and individual leisure facilities: anyone interested in urban development and residential architecture can get a close-up look at the construction methods of the 1980s here.

The Dierkow weekly market takes place every Wednesday from 08:00 to 14:00 at Hannes-Meyer-Platz. If you are planning a visit to the market, check the current schedule beforehand. The Dierkow neighbourhood library is also located at Hannes-Meyer-Platz 7. The market and library are named landmarks that add to the neighbourhood’s everyday character.

Rostock as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Rostock offers another perspective for planning your trip. With a history spanning more than 800 years, Rostock is one of the Baltic coast’s historic Hanseatic cities. A walk through the historic centre takes in, among other places, Universitätsplatz, the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Kröpeliner Straße, as well as Neuer Markt and St Mary’s Church. Architecture, urban development and Hanseatic traditions are at the heart of the experience.

The “Biologische Vielfalt” (“Biodiversity”) circular trail in the Rostock Heath offers a different focus: it is 2.8 kilometres long, has limited barriers and includes ten stops; the starting point and finish are at the Wiethagen Forestry and Charcoal Kiln Centre. The wider travel destination of Rostock thus offers both insights into the city’s history and a nature trail as different sources of inspiration. You can choose accommodation in Dierkow-Neu based on the neighbourhood’s landmarks and green spaces, or on the interests you would like to pursue in the wider Rostock destination.
