Glowe reveals two sides of the coast: a fine-grained sandy beach and, east of the harbour, a pebble beach bordered by a steep shore. The sandy beach stretches from the harbour along the promenade to beyond Kurplatz; at around 1,300 metres long, with 13 beach access points, it is a defining feature of the town. This gives you more than one idea for planning your trip: time at the beach, walks, views and culture each offer their own highlights. When looking for accommodation, you can already consider which experiences you want to shape your holiday.

Sandy beach and stony coast

The fine-grained sandy beach gives you a clear point of reference for planning: it is around 1,300 metres long and has 13 beach access points. The stretch of beach in front of the harbour, by access points 1 to 4, is suitable for families with children. Due to the natural current, the water there has an especially shallow area along the shore. There is a beach volleyball court at beach access point 2.

East of the harbour, by contrast, a pebble beach begins, bordered by the steep shore. This stretch serves as a starting point for long beach walks and exploring. The difference between fine sand and a stony shore also means a different kind of beach day: here, the focus is on spending time at the beach; there, it is on walking along the coast. If you like to vary your days, the two types of beach offer different highlights.

Promenade and views across the Baltic Sea

The promenade, around one kilometre long, runs between Kurplatz and Kap Königshörn. From sun terraces or benches, the view stretches across the Baltic Sea to Kap Arkona. These two endpoints provide orientation along this section of the promenade; the view towards Kap Arkona adds a named destination on the horizon to the coastal scenery.

There is also a viewpoint at the harbour: an approximately seven-metre-high observation tower stands by the harbour building, offering panoramic views across the entire bay. The Glowe waterway rest area is close to the small Kap Königshörn, opposite Kap Arkona. The view from the promenade and the panorama from the tower offer two different perspectives on the coast and the bay.

Walking routes and activities in the spa gardens

Glowe has seven signposted walking routes, ranging from 5.9 to 8.2 kilometres in length. This range gives you a concrete basis for comparison when deciding how far you plan to walk. It lets you include walking in your holiday plans, rather than seeing the town only as a beach destination.

Glowe spa gardens are located directly above the pebble beach and are distinguished by numerous stone sculptures by artist Mile Prerad. The park also has twelve outdoor fitness machines where adults of all ages can exercise. Public art and exercise are two different aspects of the spa gardens. Together with beach walks and the signposted routes, they offer a range of options, allowing the interests of your travel group to take centre stage.

Church and castle with a history

The Gothic Church of St. Pauli stands in Glowe’s Bobbin district. Built from fieldstones around 1400, it is the only surviving fieldstone church on the island of Rügen. Its approximate construction date and building material make the church a special example of the island’s historic architecture.

The castle complex in the Spyker district has a different history: it was once the seat of Swedish Field Marshal Gustav von Wrangel, was first mentioned in 1318 and is designed in the Renaissance style. Today, it is a popular stop for hikers and cyclists on Glowe’s cycling and hiking trail network. Bobbin’s Gothic fieldstone church and Spyker’s Renaissance complex thus offer contrasting historical highlights.

Choose the right focus for your holiday

Families with children can also take into account the stretch of beach in front of the harbour, which is described as suitable for them. The different coastal landscapes, trails and cultural sites give you an idea of which experiences in Glowe matter most for your trip.

Culture in the wider holiday destination of Vorpommern-Rügen

The wider holiday destination of Vorpommern-Rügen is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. There are an estimated 60 museums in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. These cultural attractions broaden the picture of the destination, while Glowe has its own discoveries to offer, with its coastline, trails and historic sites.
