Lietzow lies on the narrowest strip of land between the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden. Its waterscapes, trails and unusual local history give the village several different sides. When planning your trip, consider whether you would mainly like to spend time outdoors or explore its cultural history.

Lagoon landscapes and natural attractions

To the north and south, Lietzow is surrounded by extensive European protected areas in the Natura 2000 network. The Wostevitzer Teiche ponds lie nearby, to the northeast of Lietzow. These protected, undisturbed, natural shallow lakes provide a habitat for amphibians, reptiles and numerous specially protected bird species. Access to the shores is restricted.

The Schmale Heide nature reserve, with its Feuersteinfelder flint fields, is also a nearby destination. From Lietzow, you can reach it on foot via the Steilhangweg trail, which runs parallel to the railway, or by bicycle through the forest. Surrounded by woodland, the flint fields are characterised by white stones and open to semi-open vegetation. Lietzow itself has a sandy beach.

Hikes and cycling routes

The 24-kilometre Bodden-Panoramaweg quality hiking trail passes through picturesque scenery along the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, from Neuenkirchen via Lietzow to Mukran. An extensive network of cycling and hiking trails leads from Lietzow to the flint fields, to Mukran and Binz, and through Semperwald forest to Martinshafen and Glowe. The destinations lie in different directions, so you can choose your route based on the places that interest you. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Another hiking route mentioned follows the shores of the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden to Ralswiek and back. Cycling routes include a trip from Lietzow to Pulitz Island and a bike ride to Binz. Before taking the Pulitz route, check current access conditions and whether seasonal restrictions apply.

For families who would like to include nature and culture in their trip plans, alternating between outdoor activities and local history can help you decide how to spend your time. You can choose the focus of your time together based on whether you would rather explore hiking and cycling trails or learn more about Lietzow’s history.

Activities on the water

The Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden are fishing grounds for pike, zander, perch and flounder. If you plan to fish, check the applicable fishing regulations and seasons in advance. Lietzow is recommended as a starting point for kayaking tours on the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. The small, slightly stony beach in Lietzow is suitable for launching kayaks; take current shoreline conditions into account before setting out.

There is a slipway at the Bücherbahnhof, where boats can be launched into the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden. Motorboats are subject to applicable regulations. Kayak launches, fishing and launching boats are different kinds of activities on the water, and each may raise its own questions when planning.

Local history and culture

The “Lietzow culture” refers to the final phase of the Mesolithic period, shaped by nomadic hunter-gatherers. This culture was named after Lietzow. The place name thus points to a historical classification that differs from the destination’s visible landscapes and trails.

At the centre of Lietzow stands Schlösschen Klein Lichtenstein, a miniature replica of Lichtenstein Castle near Reutlingen in the Swabian Alb. It was built around 1893 by the builder of the railway line across the Lietzow dam. This offers a clear contrast when choosing the focus of your holiday: nature trails and the lagoon sit alongside a building with a history of its own.

The wider region can also add another dimension to your trip planning: Vorpommern-Rügen is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. The district is home to an estimated 60 museums.

If you are looking for accommodation in Lietzow, your planned daily activities can be a good starting point: the beach and the little castle are in the village, while Schmale Heide and the Wostevitzer Teiche ponds are nearby destinations. Consider whether you would like to spend more time on water-based activities, exploring trails or discovering local history, and focus your search accordingly.
