Altwarp Between a Border Port and Inland Dunes
Accommodation in Altwarp
Altwarp brings together a distinctive border port, inland dunes in the surrounding landscape, and village history reflected in its mill, local history room and church. These themes offer different ways to shape your trip: water, nature or culture. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, you can start by considering which of these aspects of Altwarp you want to define your days.
Border Port and Ferry Service
Altwarp Harbor is the northeasternmost harbor in the Federal Republic of Germany and a border port with neighboring Poland. Ferry crossings are offered between Altwarp and Nowe Warpno in Poland, and bicycles can be taken on board. If you plan to take the crossing, check the current timetable beforehand. This lets you include the ferry service as a distinct part of your trip.
Nature Park Trail and Inland Dunes
Altwarp is the eastern starting and ending point of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Nature Park Trail. The trail passes historic captains’ houses near the Altwarp inland dunes. The dune ridge lies immediately south of Altwarp: it is about two kilometers long and rises to as much as 16 meters above sea level. The inland dunes are also home to a stable population of otters, a special species protected under the Habitats Directive.
From mid-May to mid-September, a nature park ranger leads a walk through the Altwarp desert, or inland dune landscape, every Thursday at 1 p.m. The walk lasts about two and a half hours. The regular weekday and seasonal timeframe can help with planning: check the specific dates before organizing your day around the guided walk. At roughly two and a half hours, it makes a distinct activity for anyone who wants to focus on hiking.
Village Beach and Nature Watching
In the heart of Altwarp, the village beach has a playground and a volleyball court. Another beach is Waldstrand Altwarp-Siedlung: from the settlement, you can reach it via a forest path in about ten minutes. This gives you two options for planning your day: a beach in the center of the village and another destination reached by a described route through the forest. Just before Altwarp, the first juniper bushes can be seen from the road in Wacholdertal—another specific landscape impression on the way into the village.
Mill, Local History Room and Church
The Dutch-style windmill on MĂĽhlenberg in Altwarp operated until 1950. The local history room is on the first floor of the former schoolhouse at Sandweg 122. It is open from May to October on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., as well as by request; check the opening hours before your visit.
The church in Altwarp also has its own distinctive features: the simple brick building has a Grüneberg organ and a suspended angel. Together, the windmill, local history room and church reveal different sides of the village’s history—from the former milling operation to a place dedicated to local history, and the church’s architecture and furnishings. The local history room lists Sunday opening hours, while the ranger-led walk takes place on Thursdays; if both are on your wish list, you can plan for them on separate days.
Tailor Your Stay to Your Interests
Altwarp can be explored through different interests for the day: the ferry service ties in with the harbor and border, while the nature park trail and seasonal ranger-led walk offer a focus on hiking, and the village beach and cultural sites provide other points of interest. When looking for accommodation in Altwarp, this can be a useful starting point: think about which experiences you want to focus on, and plan the rest of your trip accordingly.
